They intentionally damaged the PAL Link connector cable, rendering the weapon useless.

It was absolutely moronic, had no political motive, and was dealt with very harshly.

I knew them both well -- I honestly think they just broke down from the high stress (may not seem like much, but those with vivid imaginations and sensitive consciences didn't do well in that environment, given the knowledge any one of those warheads spelled instead doom for tens of thousands, the sudden stress of frequent, unannounced test launches, satellite overflights, very high standards, unrelenting expectations, and constant scrutiny by SAC, AEC, DOE, DoD, and others).
