I always wonder why their "inner circle" of friends did not stop the madness.............. Sooooo sad,
The range of her voice equals or maybe even exceeds Celine or Sarah Mclachlan........

What a waste...............
Ben.
Dang you Kevin Costner!
You should've stayed as her bodyguard instead of wandering around some sort of post apocalyptic land trying to deliver mail.
Obtuse?She sang like an angle

She ran with a tough crowd. I echo the sentiments that she possessed a rare talent but is her demise a shocker or that this could have been prevented?

She sang like an angle and I could listen to her all day long.
And then there's the "posse"; they might not be druggies themselves, but they are often salaried "enablers". They help them get the stuff, they keep concerned friends and family away, etc.The "inner circle of friends" of crackheads are other crackheads; nobody else matters.
It often confounds me to think of people who have achieved such public success, being so profoundly unhappy as to destroy themselves with such intentionality.
Our daughter mentioned a couple of other names to me, last night, when we discussed this and it got me to thinking about the relationship between great talent and weak will.
Marilyn Monroe
Judy Garland
John Belushi
Elvis Presley
Mama Cass Eliot
Janice Joplin
Curt Cobain
Heath Ledger
River Phoenix
Amy Winehouse
Jimmy Hendrix
Freddy Prinz
Corey Haim

There are plenty of unknowns who go down this route too. Why should we think that the famous are immune?
I'm surprised at the publicity this is getting since I had almost forgotten about Whitney Houston. RIP nevertheless.

Remember what your grandmother always said? "Idle hands are the devil's work"?
These very talented folks make gobs of money for working a couple of hours per week. The rest of the time they have nothing much to do...
I can personally attest that the most unhappy I have ever been in my life was when I had the most free time on my hands.
Did I mention addictive personality traits are genetically determined?
You had to mention one of Costner's 2 best movies.
You need to say that on air...I dare you...
My only point is that when something like this happens we always hear, "How could this have happened to someone so rich, famous, and successful?!" Why not? They are human too. I don't see fame as a cause although it increases visibility. There are plenty of poor, unknown, unsuccessful people who succumb to drugs too.Plenty of folks that don't make it big. Yet the lessons that should be learned from the big names was never learned by those of lesser means. Making big money gives quick access to drugs and alcohol - and there are plenty, and I mean plenty, of folks that aid and abet the usage.

So... since money doesn't buy happiness, you want a job that works you to death for very little money. Like a hotelier.I can personally attest that the most unhappy I have ever been in my life was when I had the most free time on my hands.

In college we read a study of identical twins of alcoholic parents and how they turned out. I remember that one twin almost always was a non drinker, and one turned out to be an alcoholic.
When asked why they chose the lifestyle they lives, their answers were sort of spooky. Both said something to the effect that, "given my upbringing, how could I have turnedout any different?"
