Another reason it's never surprising to me is that it's rough for anyone who suddenly shoots to stardom, on a hit single or whatever, after working hungrily for it for who knows how long, giving up a lot of other things in order to focus on the goal. They suddenly have it all, their tslent is widely recognized, they have achieved their goal... now what? A lot of these people get a shock when they realize that living out their dream has not made all their personal problems go away, and they usually acquire a host of new ones, to boot. Money and adulation can soften the blow initially, but they don't provide solutions. My only point is that when something like this happens we always hear, "How could this have happened to someone so rich, famous, and successful?!" Why not? They are human too. I don't see fame as a cause although it increases visibility. There are plenty of poor, unknown, unsuccessful people who succumb to drugs too.
They don't suffer any more than the also-rans who turn to drink and drugs because they have failed, but they do suffer. You have to have a pretty healthy psyche to survive stardom, especially if for most of your life, stardom was just the fantasy that kept you going.
