Dang you Kevin Costner!

You should've stayed as her bodyguard instead of wandering around some sort of post apocalyptic land trying to deliver mail.

Okay, that was just plain funny. Totally inappropriate, but funny none the less. ;)

I am in mourning here!

I always wonder why their "inner circle" of friends did not stop the madness.............. Sooooo sad,

The range of her voice equals or maybe even exceeds Celine or Sarah Mclachlan........

What a waste...............
Ben.

The "inner circle of friends" of crackheads are other crackheads; nobody else matters.

Obtuse?

She ran with a tough crowd. I echo the sentiments that she possessed a rare talent but is her demise a shocker or that this could have been prevented?

It's much more rarely brought to the public's attention than it is born.

very sad:sad:. I was out to dinner with my children when my daughter broke the news from her iPhone.

Whitney was a beautiful woman and an amazing talent, from my home town. She had one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.

Very tragic to see friends, family and great talents ruined by drugs! I pray that her children will get the care that they need and choose a wiser path as a result of this unfortunate chapter in the life of their mom.
RIP

She sang like an angle and I could listen to her all day long.

What do these sound like, exactly?

On those rare occasions I take inventory and wonder if I shouldn't have somehow been more successful, I just have to count the number of superstars I've outlived.

I just don't believe it's possible to feel better that I did yesterday after a workout and the hot tub at the Y.

Never a fan, and another example of a story replayed time, and time again. Still it is sad that any human must go through such self destruction. RIP.

Unfortunately, some are all too easily undone by their own inner demons. RIP. A real tragedy, and unfortunately one we'll see again.

Did I mention addictive personality traits are genetically determined?

And then there's the "posse"; they might not be druggies themselves, but they are often salaried "enablers". They help them get the stuff, they keep concerned friends and family away, etc.
I am really not surprised at all about Whitney... and yeah, it's sad. I was never a big fan; found her more technical than soulful. But dang, what a voice! Superhuman.

It often confounds me to think of people who have achieved such public success, being so profoundly unhappy as to destroy themselves with such intentionality.

Our daughter mentioned a couple of other names to me, last night, when we discussed this and it got me to thinking about the relationship between great talent and weak will.

Marilyn Monroe
Judy Garland
John Belushi
Elvis Presley
Mama Cass Eliot
Janice Joplin
Curt Cobain
Heath Ledger
River Phoenix
Amy Winehouse
Jimmy Hendrix
Freddy Prinz
Corey Haim

Remember what your grandmother always said? "Idle hands are the devil's work"?

These very talented folks make gobs of money for working a couple of hours per week. The rest of the time they have nothing much to do...

I can personally attest that the most unhappy I have ever been in my life was when I had the most free time on my hands.

There are plenty of unknowns who go down this route too. Why should we think that the famous are immune?

I'm surprised at the publicity this is getting since I had almost forgotten about Whitney Houston. RIP nevertheless.

Plenty of folks that don't make it big. Yet the lessons that should be learned from the big names was never learned by those of lesser means. Making big money gives quick access to drugs and alcohol - and there are plenty, and I mean plenty, of folks that aid and abet the usage.

RIP Whitney.

You had to mention one of Costner's 2 best movies.

What a unique and interesting observation. I need to ponder that one.

I understand your point but think about siblings that go opposite routes in life as a disqualifier AND sort a of proof of the truth in what you said.

In college we read a study of identical twins of alcoholic parents and how they turned out. I remember that one twin almost always was a non drinker, and one turned out to be an alcoholic.

When asked why they chose the lifestyle they lives, their answers were sort of spooky. Both said something to the effect that, "given my upbringing, how could I have turnedout any different?"

I know, it was either that or, you can't trust a bodyguard who will plow up his corn to build a baseball diamond. (as we know, plowing up corn to build an airstrip is ok)

You need to say that on air...I dare you...:rofl:

Must keep job-it almost pays enough to own a plane.

My only point is that when something like this happens we always hear, "How could this have happened to someone so rich, famous, and successful?!" Why not? They are human too. I don't see fame as a cause although it increases visibility. There are plenty of poor, unknown, unsuccessful people who succumb to drugs too.

Michael Jackson.

According to Tony Bennett, the solution is to legalize drugs.

So... since money doesn't buy happiness, you want a job that works you to death for very little money. Like a hotelier. :)

Exactly, she was one of hundreds of crackheads that died across the country yesterday, the only reason you know about her is because she was a rich and famous crackhead.

Oh, I agree completely. I just didn't say so explicitly.

I've met any number of folks that could be considered "rich, famous, and successful". With a small handful of exceptions, most of them are no different than ordinary folks. They just have more money.

But I do observe that *some* let the fame and fortune go to their head, which makes them think they're invincible. That is a different attitude from the "what have I got to lose" attitude that *some* less privileged folks get.

Your genes determine your potential, not who you will be. Someone with an addictive personality will not become addicted if they are never exposed to the habitually used substance. The identical twins illustrate this quite nicely, as they were genetic duplicates, save for the rearrangements in their immune systems and the alleles in their gametes. Yet they turned out quite differently in this instance.

Geneticists flock to the annual identical twin convention in Twinsburg Ohio.

I think the way her life played out was more of a tragedy than her death, which was predictable. It doesn't make it any less sad.

RIP Whitney.
