The FAA received my 8500-8 form on Sept 16 2013. Based on your experience with them, your guess when should I hear from them about my S. I. I had a stent about 2 and a half years ago with excellent reports since then.

If it went to Joklahoma City in the normal queue, it was running about 12 weeks to have someone even look to see what it was. This may be worse with the October shutdown. Once you get routed on some reviewers desk, you're kind of in normal propagation delay, +/- two weeks once they get any further information they want.
 
Quick question in SI's...
When you go for your medical and it's deferred to OKC, is your old medical no longer valid due to the deferral? In other words, are you grounded from the date you apply and are deferred until the new one comes back?

It is not addressed in 8500.1(D).

We do know from the attach that if your last interaction was ANYTHING BUT an issuance, you cannot exercise LSA privileges, and that includes deferral.

For a special issuance holder, who is still authorized by a valid SI medical certificate, his letter of auth. will say, "if there has been an adverse change you are to ground and inform the agency immediately". This means, if the AME cannot reissue you, you are still to ground.

But the case of a regular issuance holder is not quite so clear. It is plain, however, the 67.313 applies. Whose opinion? That of the FAS and his delegated representatives (RFSs, AMCD director of certification). This is why AMEs who will not call to get the situation clarified, are not doing airmen a service. Because if he does not call, the pilot cannot know if he is compliance with the "current policy of the FAS" and so compliance cannot be assured.

Jerry, you're not impatient. The Agency is not able to act appropriately in a timely manner.

This is one of the PRIME arguments for banishing the 3rd class for a group of day VFR airmen below 6,000 lbs. :yes:. It has gotten to the heights of ridiculousness.
 
What do 1st class medical holders who fly for a living do? Take 4 months off!?
 
Interact with the government long enough (FAA for Doc, IRS for me, a CPA) and every day is full of sighs. And sometimes anger.

Stan, you forgot mentioning dealing with the state. In Illinois they're worse than the IRS.

Putting up with FAA is bad enough. But putting up with Honeck is over the top. STUFF A SOCK IN IT.

Saying I've profited from the system- that is a direct jab and I don't have to put up with it. (I'm barely in the 15% bracket on Aeromed).

You're right. Has the State of Illinois released corporate refund requests yet? We have a client from Oregon that requested a refund of an overpayment from Illinois a few years ago. Illinois said no, they don't have enough money in their refund fund. Fine, so we requested that instead of a refund, can we just apply that overpayment to the subsequent year? The answer was no, they had to pay in the full boat for the following year, even though Illinois won't release their refund from the earlier year.

What a system. Sounds like the Chicago mob is running it. :mad2:

You've given a ton of helpful free certification advice here and the AOPA forum so I can easily understand why you are upset. What people don't understand is that nobody pays well for knowledge or understanding and that the fees you receive are actually very low compared to other specialists. It's easier to make a buck doing procedures or interpreting imaging studies. Getting back a medical certificate as the result of your efforts is an extremely rare talent and should be worth a lot to the airman.
 
I can understand why Dr Bruce is upset. Having dealt with medical professionals over the past few years I have been extremely lucky to find a good GP, WLS surgeon, and have had the good fortune to work with a great AME - Dr. Chien. I can say that no one has spent more time being honest with me as to what data I would need to pass my 3rd class medical.

When i notice that he has responded to a question, I read every one of Dr. Bruce's posts. Why? Because I learn. I see how Dr. Bruce has expressed his opinion without compensation to those of us here. I just re-read the thread regarding color blindness. I am appalled that Dr. Bruce would be the target of some of those comments. Frankly, Dr. Bruce is owed an apology. I took offense when someone took jabs at me and my profession. I know how he feels and I am embarrassed that a pilot who take those shots at him.

When I went to Dr. Bruce for a consult then a medical exam, his fees were more than fair. His fees for both were only slightly more than what I paid for my sons medical and I had a much tougher case than an in shape healthy 20 year old. He is always there supporting us in our endeavors. I am disgusted with the abuse and insults slung at a well educated, knowledgable, compassionate, consummate professional such as Dr. Chien. Those slinging need to grow up.

I am grateful that Dr. Chien practices relatively close via car or plane as I appreciate his expertise and gladly pay his modest fees. He didn't create the need for 3rd class medicals. He does however provide a valuable service in navigating the bureaucratic BS promulgated by the FAA. And does so reasonably and professionally. He is a valuable resource to the aviation community.

That's how I feel. If you don't like it, sling insults at me. I don't care.
