The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
Is the transmit system of my radios such that if my passenger was to say something while I had the PTT engaged, their voice would be heard over the frequency?

Depends on how loud they are talking.

Like Wayne said!

Seriously, if it was wired properly, whomever presses the PTT will be transmitting with their microphone hot to the exclusion of all others. I believe that most will, if both PTTs are pressed simultaneously, give the pilot priority.

On the way home from Tulsa today I was monitoring center and listening to the controllers in the background along with the controller on McAlester low.

Depends on how your aircraft is set up. Most only send the person who's PTT is depressed to the radio.

it's funny how quiet the background hoise gets after my 8 year old reads back the clearance

I know it's just a coincidence and represents only a small fraction of pilot exchanges with clearance delivery, but I'm still amazed at the number of times I'm ready to push the button for VFR taxi when Ground Control reads a clearance to some guy in a Lear that takes several minutes to transmit and at least twice as long to read back correctly.

Are they just watching my taxiway to see if I'm on the way out?

you have a 180, just take off from the taxiway while they have their heads down
