POA Movie thread

We just saw Tolkien on HBO. If you like boring costume dramas it’s your cup of tea, Mrs. Steingar loves those sorts of things and grooves on it. Me somewhat less so.

“Muscle Shoals”

Anyone who likes music has heard of Muscle Shoals, even if you don’t know it.

A documentary about the whitest guys you’ve ever seen, recording the greatest R&B ever played.

And it didn’t stop there:

“Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two”

It’s great fun. And you’ll recognize “the sound”.

nope - but the trailer makes it look worth watching.

Mary Queen of Scotts, for those of you who like well-cast boring costume dramas. Even Mrs. Steingar had a tough time with that.
Us was outrageously good.
I liked the more recent version Hellboy, but I think I'm alone in that.
Just saw The Mule, with Clint Eastwood as an elderly drug mule. Highly recommended.

Here’s a crazy one:

Isle of Dogs

A strange movie with an interesting story, a 12 yo kid with a head injury, a goofy airplane crash, and good dogs. What’s not to like?

"Paul McCartney Really is Dead" has to be the conspiracy theory on steroids if there ever was one. I have Amazon Fire on my tv and sometimes I search for documentaries on music, flying, etc. I watched this one a few weeks ago...good grief ! Somebody has way too much time on their hands !

Just watched "Birdcage" w/ Sandra Bullock. Actually, she was in it... she didn't actually watch it with me, although that would have been cool. Not bad, fairly intense and riveting, Malkovich was also in it and his usually awesome self, but one of those nouveau movies that is too hip to elaborate on the premise, and instead uses it as a pretext for commentary on the human condition. Still... yeah, thumbs up. Good flick.

Watched "The Arrival" with Charlie Sheen. It falls in to the category of a movie that is so bad it's actually entertaining.

Hearing from other sources that the new Midway is terrible for a multitude of reasons, and it starts in the opening scene and doesn’t let up. LOL.

Tried watching "Quicksand" the other night. As much as I wanted to like it... I lasted about 20 minutes before giving up. Amazon Prime and Netflix are both blessings (The Crown, Flebag, Mrs. Maisel) and curses.

The Outsider. Adaptation of Stephen King's novel. It's a strange one. Kinda like a train wreck...you don't really want to watch it, but you somehow can't look away.

Finally watched “Joker” tonight. I’m not sure if I liked it. It wasn’t what I expected. I knew ahead time it was a dive into mental illness, but maybe it was darker than I expected.

Just watched “John Wick”.

Excellent movie, and you can’t help but agree with the premise for killing everyone. I mean, if someone stole my car and killed my dog...

I watched it a few months ago and I agree. I thought it was very good, but not sure if I really liked it per se.

Finally saw "Knives Out" over the weekend, stellar cast, highly entertaining!
Cool. We were going to see that one afternoon but the shows were sold out. Then we kind of forgot about it. I'll have to put that on the list of things to do.

Don't stop with 1.. Continue on to Chapters 2 and 3... (Hint: Chapter 4 is set to be released next year). Also, Keanu actually trained at a shooting range extensively to get his gun handling to not look too hokey. JW has become my 'go-to' if I'm in a hotel channel surfing for something to watch.

I intend to watch 2 and 3 as well.

Now that is hilarious.

Being on day 6 of Laurie's shift of being solo with the kids, and with the prospect of being solo dad for 2 weeks if Laurie gets stuck on the road I needed something to cheer me up. So seeing 100 people get shot in the head over stealing a man's car and killing his dog did the trick. :)

Here’s another one for a quarantine watch list:

Grabbers

I haven’t seen it in a long time, so I hope it’s aged well. Aliens land in a small island village and start eating the residents...until the residents discover the aliens are allergic to alcohol.

Well, get your Netflix and Hulu subscriptions up to date....Regal Theatres just announced they are closing all theaters.

If you have a local public library card, there's a good chance your library is a subscriber. If so, you can start an account for free. There is quite a variety of movies, but be careful. Many are "films", not "movies", so you might end up with something and think, "What have I gotten myself into?"

Last night we watched this:

It was a pretty enjoyable way to spend 80 minutes with no NCAA basketball tournament.

Over the past couple of nights since my brother in law shared his extensive movie collection with us...

Yesterday -- Enjoyable, could have been better, but no complaints.

Bohemian Rhapsody
-- As a Queen fan since about '75, I liked it a lot.

Rise of Skywalker
-- As a fan of Star Wars since the very first theater release night (actually before that, when I was reading magazine articles about the upcoming movie)... meh. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater, and I hope they just let the whole thing die. I doubt they will, though; they'll milk it for every penny they can for another 50 years. But I'm done. I just don't care about any of the characters any more... at all.

I kind of miss Joe Bob Briggs from "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive In" movie reviews back in the '80s.

He'd review a movie, give you the body count and the breast count, and then say, "Joe Bob says, 'Check it out!'"

I didn't know this was a thing until I saw the trailer this morning:

Anyone heard about it?

The book is outstanding. Same author who wrote the “HORNBLOWER” (ago of sail) series. The descriptions of interaction between deep water and modern seamanship is phenomal.

Seven Samurai

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it, but it seems to get better each time. I watched it again tonight. That final battle scene is outstanding.

Recently saw The Disaster Artist.

That's a fun movie, too. And make sure to stick around through the closing credits.
