I'm going on an indefinite POA holiday. Just too many nonphysician Doctors here who claim to know what they can't possibly know. Worse, they think they know. Find me on the red board.

You know who you are however......you may apply to your state medical board for licensure....

Sorry to hear this Doc. Will you still get PMs? I have always appreciated your input and I do not do the Red Board.

I used to, but I'm more in to Sauvignon Blancs lately.

I hope it is a very temporary indefinite holiday. I have never had occasion to ask you a question, but I have learned much by reading your posts and I for one will definitely miss you.

I understand and respect your decision, but is there any chance we can talk you out of this? You are a big part of what makes POA valuable.

Thank you for your help.
I hope you return.

Sad news indeed Dr. Bruce. I do understand your view, I hope it is a short "vacation", your input here is invaluable.

Okay I'm going to play devil's advocate. Dr. Bruce, I concur with the others that your medical knowledge and FAA insight is invaluable.

BUT

you are an arrogant SOB. The only more arrogant class of people than pilots are doctors. And you are both.

Get over it dude. Seriously. I don't mean that as an attack. I like you but I'm calling the shots as I see them. As god like as you are portrayed, you are still one of us. Come down off the hill and talk to us.

I think the people that need and could use your advice will use it over other self proclaimed experts that may have interjected their opinions. Remember this is an Internet message board, not the AMA journal of medicine.

snipped the rest

Wow. I don't see Dr. C. as arrogant at all. Knowledgeable and experienced and willing to share - yup. Above all others? nope. It's tough when you're an expert in a field and less qualified folks want to shoot at you. Dr. C. handles it well.

Gee, I didn't realize I had signed into the Spin Zone again.

Let's see, you call him an SOB then state it's not a personal attack?

Dr. Chien: I read all your posts because I know that you know what you're talking about. I do not have a current medical, it was denied for lack of tests, which I could not afford out-of-pocket. But, when I am able I will be calling on you for your advice before I do anything. I will gladly pay for your services, knowing that you can save me lot's of time and trouble.

Please don't let others deprive those of us who need you. I think most will agree that we don't pay heed to them anyway. I know who I trust.

Just a young, old man who lives to fly again.

Physician, heal thyself.

The people you are hurting are not the other doctors, doc. :dunno:

Hey Sac, Phone's ringin'....it's the Pot. Calling you black.

Yeah well, I'm expressing my feelings and I'm not running for public office. Like I said, I like Dr Bruce but nobody is perfect including him. Who's medical advice would I follow? His.

Doesn't erase what I think of him personally, based on what he posts.

Hey Doc, I don't know you but I've been lurking and reading enough to know you by reputation and I, too, hope you'll come back sooner rather than later cause I have a feeling that I'll probably need your advice too when I finally go for my medical...I've had some issues (nothing that should be disqualifying to my untrained, uneducated mind...but knowing nearly definitively from a so-far-trusted source sure would be nice)

I have no idea what the red board is....

On checking the doctor's recent posting history, the following post appears to be the first indication, and reason, for his notice to stay away from PoA for an indefinite time:

The problem here seems to be emotional stress or upset and a departure seems wise for now. (I've done the same thing in other realms - seemed to work for me.) The practice of medicine, dealing as it does with people's health and lives on a daily basis, is not kind to its practitioners; at least that seems to be the case.

There is an unavoidable PoA problem, though: if posters cannot post anonymously to the medical topics group, it loses some of its value. On the other hand the content of anonymous posts can't be controlled. The only post-post control lies in the minds and fingers of prospective PoA responders. Seeing as we are all slaves to our personalities, the kind of control we sometimes need fails us.

Sac, if you spent time with Bruce you'd know he's a good guy and a pilot at heart. He was just smart enough to know better than to try to make a decent living in the flying game and we're all better off as a result.

BTW, I can see the letter now . . .

Dear Dr. Chien:

Hey, Bruce, it's Sac from the Blue Board. Bro, I want to apologize for being a bit harsh when you adiosed a while back. I wasn't thinking clearly and just lost it for a few minutes.

Anyway, I got this little ticker problem that the local AME can't figure out, and I was wondering if there's any way that you could take a look . . .

lmfao...

Well, I now know who to hire for my POA PR campaign....

I don't think he's arrogant as much as "doesn't suffer fools well".

Couple that with "ask-holes" who ask for advice then don't follow it, then come back asking again how to fix....,

Anyways. Glad I've got his email.

Dear Dr. Chien:

Thank you for your support and in depth knowledge you have shared with us!
I am hopeful that your Holiday will be short as I for one trust your wisdom in making the right decisions when considering medical issues and medical certification.

Jesu Christo . . . what is wrong with you guys . . . everybody have their in laws show up yesterday or something and tell them what they honestly think about them marrying their kids?

Sac Arrow - uncalled for. Pure nasty. What do you care if someone posts here or not?

Bruce - you asked me once about taking a deep breath - if you don't like the obnoxious answers some unreg guy keeps coming back with . . .stop reading the thread man. Be the adult. There are times when I make a decision to stop responding to a thread - the trolls just get to me to much.

Everyone else - why are you enabling the abuse of fellow pilots. . . geesh. Its not like they are wearing epaulets in a Skyhawk for gosh sakes. Its unimportant stuff - geesh guys. Nothing like acting like adults.

Well, I now know who to hire for my POA PR campaign....

Wouldn't work. A tad too many posters seem to glom onto the aspect of a post that most irritates them or that they most agree with - and so the rest of the post becomes a mental blur.

You did well on being a devil's advocate. With good emphasis on the devil. It appears not everyone assumes you are just being an advocate. The general gist of your original post seemed to contain some respect for his efforts but I get the impression that you seem to have the same aversion to excessive slobbering over professionals that I also have.

The last group flight I was on there was a nice pilot who let me ride in the Skywagon. The lead CFI was front right seat. I found out this was because he was having trouble with his medical and the FAA kept asking for tests.

I pulled out my phone and gave him Dr. Bruce's info confident he could help this pilot fly solo again.

I looked at my PM box which was full and I had to delete some PMs. The very first ones included a message from Dr. Bruce about my dental visits.

Thank you Dr. Bruce for that and other questions / answers I've had.

I don't go to the red board much, but I hope the guy I sent to you has hired you.

Man Bruce I am sorry to hear a few have ruined the invaluable truth we get from you. I would trust your insight and recommendations more than any other on the PoA.
God Speed and hurry back. The fan base will miss you.
Lynn

So sorry to hear of Dr. Bruce's decision to leave POA. I have read many of his posts, and whether you agree with them, or his delivery, they are always well researched and careful to provide what he feels is the best advice. I am not an AME, and cannot imagine being in the position he is often in, that being having to have to follow rules and regulations you do not always agree with. I think we can all agree some of his posts were harsh, but even with that being said I think they have always been with the best of intentions. Dr. Bruce clearly cares about flying and keeping flying safe, and for that we all should be thankful.

Dr. Chien is probably the least arrogant doctor/pilot I know (and yes I do know more than one). IMO his only fault is that he doesn't tolerate non-MDs who offer medical advice very well. I've also never met any other medical professional who spends so much time providing free and useful advice.
