So the kid has done real well in school, and with a birthday coming up I want to surprise him...

I know all of his friends have either/or.... and I have not a clue...

Which of the two is a better option not only for the games but all the other entertainment stuff too.

Thanks

Xbox is winning. Scores of games for them.

Playstation is like Android. It may be better in some regards, but it's limited. Also, it's higher end type gaming for us old rich bastards imo. Not kids.

Ask his friends parents what they have, if you guess wrong it will ruin his life and he will hate you forever! :nono::nono::D

PlayStation had appeal when physical media was a thing as it had a BluRay player built in. But nobody uses physical media anymore and the future is streaming. With that in mind I'd have to lean towards Xbox. Plus, Microsoft is showing a real interest in youth and gaming with their purchase of MineCraft ( 2.5 Billion with a B ) so I'd guess going forward Xbox is a winner.

Has lots of tie ins too if your in the MicroSoft ecosphere.

I'm pretty happy with my PS4. I much prefer Sony over Microsoft. An example - with a PS4 you can buy a larger hard drive and install it yourself. Do that with a Xbox and Microsoft will ban your console from Xbox Live.

Really though, I'd ask which he wants, and get that else you're sure to buy what isn't cool in his circle of friends.

PS4 has a faster gpu which hasn't really borne out in drastic differences in games though.
Xbone faster cpu though both are junky 1.6 and 1.75 ghz low power amd octocore. Both now have expandable HD space which is needed cause even with 1tb hd's its easy to fill them.

Honestly it comes down to is he a Halo guy or a Playstation guy. Pretty much everything nowdays is cross platform, and outside of exclusives like Bloodborne, or Persona anything you can play on one system you can play on another.

TLdr ask him which he wants cause it really matters what his friends have and if he's a Halo guy.

My opinion I hate them both MS and sony made underpowered POS consoles this go around.

Both are good, but I'd go for the Xbox

Its all about what his friends have and play. It does no good if he has one and all his friends have the other.

I recant to ask the kid.

Anything else, and we're shopping for ourselves.

In that case, go with an alien or similar gaming console with three LG 3D 47" HD screens for FSX and X-Plane simulation and a mega multi-screen video card off a quad core i5 over clocked to 4Ghz or better.:D

+1 on XBox One

If I'm not at the race track or flying a bunch of buddies and I are playing Battlefield 4. :)

Don't forget that xBox uses USB connectors which can utilize extra accessories including keyboards (for typing in usernames and passwords within seconds instead of minutes of fiddling with a controller).
But then again, the whole RROD scare is pretty widespread.

PS4: better at games
XB1: better at everything else

Very true. Also if you go XBox, make sure it the friends have XBox 360, or XBox One. They are not compatible online, or with each other's game disks.

I personally have been an XBox guy since the demise of Nintendo. The first 360s were crap. The second version is holding up just fine. I have no plans to go XBox One until they force me to. I suspect in a year or so they will.

I have never played online with PS4, so I don't know what their service is like, but XBox Live is pretty good IMO. They seem to try a little more from what I've heard to keep hacking, modding and cheating to a minimum and mostly that is what I see. I have heard it is out of control on Playstation and that finding a good, fair game with randoms is a challenge. It may all be hearsay though, as I have never had a Playstation.

Whatever his friends have.

I've got a PS3 but can't say I know a whole lot about it. I kind of got jaded off on the XBOX when Microsoft laughed at us when we suggested there was a market for them in the intelligence industry.

Both the PS3 and PS4 have USB ports. You can also use bluetooth keyboards.
