We need a tire-kicker forum for ppl like me who are always pondering their next plane (even if that is something that never happens!)

Which airplane is the fastest, with only these requirements to start:
-<$100K.....but have to be less than 1/2 towards tbo (ie <850hrs with a tbo of 1700)
-SE piston
-4 seats

-exp ok; high/low wing ok; I don't care about paint/interior/radios that much; parachutes ok I guess-ha; what else?
 
Fast 4 seater with mid-time engine under 100K. There is probably several that fit the requirement. Since "fast" seems to be the key work, you can get a nicely equipped Mooney M20J for that price. I would think there are some Bo's in that price range as well.

Minor tweak: 'less than 1/2 tbo' but yes otherwise.

I think with the brain bank of aircraft knowledge on POA we don't need a computer algorithm to help people choose their ideal airplane!

Hands down the Bellanca Super Viking.

Comanche 400. The Viking is like a 3 seater. There's 4 seats, but 3/4 sized. 4 * 3/4 = 3
 
Actually, Ed my need for four seats is very limited. I really use the back seat mostly for crap we buy and haul around. Twice a year maybe I take 3-4 people but usually its sightseeing. My true pref is a fast two seater but I don't make all the decisions! (anyone know of an SX-300 for <$100K?!)
 
Look at 182 late 60's early 70's. Especially one with a 520/540 engine upgrade. 120-145 knot cruise speeds depending on which motor and 09-16 gph with load of 1100lbs.

How is that possibly the fastest?
 
We see about 155-160 kts TAS in our 64 Comanche 250 all day lone. And one of those is well within your price range.
 
A Comanche 260 would work,or maybe an older 210.

I will modify that to; "4 seats available" but rarely if ever need all 4. Thanks.
I am more speed motivated.
 
There is a turbo 210 on barnstormers 0stoh and 900 since major for under 100k.
 
If it's about speed in a single, you're going to want a turbo, or TN and get up into the 20's.
 
There should be a master index of POA threads to map mission profiles to airplane recommendations. Or a flow chart. I've wanted to ask for myself but I know that the answer is already somewhere lurking among the old threads here.

Unless they are sharing the avgas cost, carrying back seat passengers is overrated. Why treat 'em any better than steerage, just like the airlines? :D

The ultimate piston single. Not much out there that can keep up with one of those for the price.
 
C180 skywagon, hauls a ton, cruise 140kts, just as happy as a cross country heavy hauler as it is on tundras, skis, floats or amphibs if you ever want to explore, holds it value very well, great IFR platform and vew simple systems, fits 4 plus stuff with ease.

100k will get you a nice example, most likley /G and, mid time or less engine, good ramp appeal

That's why I take out the back seat in the comanche and just lash them to the floor :)

I've flown in Dave's Viking. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cramped for me. Flies nice, but I'd want out after about 30 minutes.

Definitely not ultimate fast for as much as it drinks and as small as it is. I could agree with ultimate cramped, or ultimate thirsty, or ultimate loud. It's priced for the value it provides, which isn't much.
 
LongEZ - well under your budget. Heck, for $50K, you could get one with glass, autopilot, oxygen, etc. Two seats, though.
 
For $80k you can get some nice V tail Bonanzas. In fact most of the K35 through V35s fit this bill. Get one with a 520 or a 550 and you have an honest 200mph cross county traveler.

Some in this price range will have good avionics as well.

But I'm biased.

Could be that's why Dave's looking for a change? I sure he'll find your alternate suggestions (faster, less thirsty, roomier, much quieter, and better value) very helpful. ;)
 
Are all S models V tail?
Are the all the same fuse length?
(I know many say there is no such thing as tail waggle..)

The 35s are all V-tails (regardless of the letter in front).
The 33s and 36s are straight tails (the Debonairs/33s only went to a G33 model)

The later the model (e.g. V35) the longer the body. Not sure by how much - but a little. Also a little heavier.

The waggle is a OWT - something like a mooney having a "small cabin". Depends upon your perspective. I've been in Cherokees with more waggle than my -35 (I even hear the straight tails "waggle" a bit.) ... regardless, all you do is rest your feet on the pedals and no more "Bonanza Boogie"...

Throwing the flag on this one. I got no dog in this fight, and Cherokees really don't belong in this thread discussion anyways, but that's a copout. PA-28s and 32s do not require any foot pressure at all in order to fly yaw-dampened, the Beech 35 does. It's not a myth. I got nothing against beech, they're fine airplanes. Way faster and with controls much more harmonized than the ratchet-like sticky Cherokee stabilator. All in all, more capable airplanes than my Piper. But, better yaw-dampened than a PA28/32? Get real. Let's keep this thing honest. What's next, CG burn back is a myth too? :D
 
Could be tips. But I just don't have waggle that or it is so minimal I don't notice.

Go figure. Guess my yaw inducer is broken. I'll have it checked.

CG however is an issue.
