I'm looking to take some family for some breakfast or lunch this Sunday. But the problem is that I don't know where I should go. I'll be departing from Athens, Georgia and I would prefer to fly no more than an hour one way. Any recommendations on places to go? Thanks guys!

Peach State Aerodrome is a great choice if the topography doesn't bother you. After that, you have Lawrenceville, then Marietta, and PDK. Is the place at Winder still open/open on Sunday?

Unfortunately, I've heard that the place at Winder closed down. Which would be the better place for a low time pilot? Flying out of Athens, I'm pretty comfortable talking to ATC, but I don't want to get in over my head on one of my first flights with family.

Low time pilot? I'd try the Flying Machine at LZU - Lawrenceville. That would be a relatively short flight, low intensity towered airport, and no ramp fees. You'd probably be hit with a ramp fee at McCollum or PDK, the traffic at PDK can get intense, and Peach State might be best visited with an experienced pilot in the right seat, at least the first time.

Peach State (GA2) is awesome. The food is great. It is a 2,400' sloped grass field... and with all of this rain...

Flying Machine at LZU is somewhere I don't care to waste anymore time. I've given them enough.

Spitfire Grill at WDR is closed permanently.

JZP has a decent BBQ place just off field in town. Just take the rental car.

I wouldn't fly into PDK for the Downwind Cafe. It's not worth the headache.

I don't know of many other places I've been to that lie within an hour of AHN.

Yea, my first thought was that the turf would be pretty soft. Is it a rental car or courtesy car at JZP? If its a courtesy car, do I just walk in and say "hey, I'd like to take the car?" Also, I don't really know anything about ramp fees. How do I go about determining if I have to pay them or not? My guess is that its just dependent on the FBO and that I should call ahead and ask about them or check out their website, right?

How about the Runway Cafe at GMU? Free parking, restaurant gives a discount to those flying in, playground for the kids.

Think "small country town" when thinking about JZP. It's a crew car.

Start the conversation about the local BBQ. They'll most likely offer you the car, or you can ask to borrow it for the BBQ run. Make small talk. Be a human being. Ask questions.

I've never paid any ramp fees there but I either bought gas and/or oil. I doubt they'd charge for a lunch run.

Before you leave, just ask to make sure everything's squared away.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself.

Im curious, any specific reason or you've just been there too many times? I haven't been there yet but I'd like to go one day.

:yeahthat:

They do close early on Sundays, check the website for hours first.

Several of us in the EAA Chapter go there on a fairly regular basis. I've never had bad food there. Sometimes the service can be slow. Will be having dinner there Friday prior to our chapter business meeting.

Boo, I liked that place and the Brits that owned it. Bummer.

Strange alternate suggestion: Circumnavigate around the north side of the bravo and fly over to Decatur, AL. (DCU) Grab a crew car and hit Big Bob Gibsons BBQ, they have pretty good stuff.

I'm a big fan of the Elevation Chophouse at KRYY...been there several times. However, I do not like that since Cobb County became an "International" airport that they are charging (I think) a $5 security fee. Sucks for us small guys.

There's a 5000ft corridor that lets you fly right under the Bravo, just gotta stay over two ~3500ft class Ds (PDK & FTY) undeneath. It's a nice ride with a good view of ATL and will save going around the B space.

EDIT: Whoops, just looked at where DCU is...going to the north is actually straighter.

Andy, any update on the possible re-opening?

The investors' deal fell apart when the airport authority tried to double the rent, making it completely unprofitable. I guess they'd rather have no revenue and an empty room than some revenue and something that draws traffic to the airport. :dunno:

I'll let ya'll know if somebody else steps up to re-open it.

I like the Flying Machine at KLZU. Good food, service is a little slow, but hey take your time and enjoy it I guess!

I like the Downwind at KPDK. Love sitting on the deck and watching ops with a burger.

Haven't tried Elevation at KRYY yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Same with Barnstormers at Peach State.

Ever since Hawthorne purchased it, they've had that fee. It used to be free to land there, but now they charge $25. They do cut it in half if you're only picking up a passenger. thought someone told me they don't waive any fees for going to Chophouse, but I haven't found out first hand.

They do waive the $25 if you fill up, but with their gas being >$2 than my local airport, it's not worth it. They actually disabled comments on airnav b/c of all the negative posts about their fees.

Does it have to be in Georgia? Also, how far is an hour / what speed? An hour in a Mooney will get you into NC while an hour in a 152 will barely get you to Fulton County.

Slightly more than an hour from AHN, but Chattanooga (KCHA) has a great restaurant on the river that's a short drive from the airport.

Wilson Air has 3 crew cars and they will literally roll out a red carpet for you when you land there.

Post a PIREP for us.

No, it doesn't have to be in Georgia. Just within about 115 nm or so. I'll be in a 172.

Mcrae has a small uncontrolled airport right next to the Little Ocmulgee State Park. There is a restaurant that serves a buffet. It's alright but definitely nothing fancy. We've flown there 2 or 3 times. IIRC, there is a call box and they will send a truck to pick you up. If you walk, it's about a 15 minute walk. You need to check the hours of the restaurant; I would imagine they're hours are seasonal. I checked airnav, 113 nm.

Another vote for Jasper-KJZP. We like the Mexican Restaurant near the airport (just North of 16). It is an easy 2 minute drive there or go into town. KJZP is a nice little country airport and coming from AHN you will have a nice view of the mountains and Lake Lanier.
As with any airport, best to call ahead to get answers and reserve a car.

Yea, KJZP is looking like a winner right now. My family likes barbecue and there's a BBQ place not too far from the airport.
Looking at the sectional, it doesn't look like the mountains will pose too much of a problem, but I'll still run over this with my CFI since it'll be my first time venturing into the "mountains" and my first time taking passengers without a CFI. Any advice for mountain flying based off your experience?

If you get to mountains you've gone too far, turn around!!!

Fly the airplane, tell them what you are doing and never say "oops or oh-oh".

You'll probably skirt the south side of the small hills that start the Appalachian chain. Not a problem unless the winds are strong - if they are, you're likely to see some turbulence, both en-route and at JZP. If that comes to pass, Lawrenceville is in a relatively flat location, meaning less turbulence and happier passengers.

We flew down to the Flying Machine once a long time ago for lunch, me and two other buddies. Coming back we encountered pretty good turb and flew the whole way back under Va while getting the crap kicked out of us. We had all eaten a pretty hearty meal and were looking quite green. All the vents were open and nobody said a word the whole way back. I think we were but one thin mint away from spewing all over that plane. :vomit:

Too bad you aren't going on Saturday. You could come to LZU, have you and your family ride on Ron Alexander's DC-3 and get a 10% discount at The Flying Machine.

I love Peach State, but with all the rain this last week the turf might be still soggy by Sunday. The airport is not that difficult to go in and out of, just try not take off uphill.

why not find a local place in Athens then take the family for a sightseeing ride?, well maybe you should fly first, then eat, just in case someone gets airsick

What time are y'all going to be out there? I have my check ride at 10:00 AM at KGRD so I'm trying not to fly anymore Saturday cause I'll probably be wiped out. Do you all meet out there monthly or something?

Yea, thats definitely an option, but I was hoping to take them somewhere to eat. Its kind of like your first solo--yea, you're flying, but it doesn't really mean much until you actually do your first solo cross country and end up somewhere you've never been before.

I had them top my plane off when we went, but that was only like 12 gallons or something. Went in, told them we were going to the Chophouse as well, and still got smacked with whatever the fee was. Too bad too because it was nice to send people there in small planes! May have to rethink that if they're going to be charging everyone who wants to come in and go there. Is there an alternative to parking at the FBO there?

+1.....good food, nice people. Easy towered field for those that don't have much experience with them; and less than an hour each way.

I just called the FBO and the ramp fee for a single engine GA is $5. We are heading to the Chophouse saturday from LZU. 20 minute flight at most. Great starter destination for the wife. It'll be the first flight outside of just sightseeing.

Why do you always have the fun stuff scheduled on days that I have no chance of making?

That doesn't sound right but hopefully that's all they charge you. The security fee itself is $5 IIRC. I just picked up my daughter last Friday. Never turned off the prop. Total time was 3 minutes. I told her to pay when she arrived, and I think it was $13 or something in that neighborhood.

I thought maybe you had moved to the west coast or something ;)

This most recent breakfast, I was sitting in my living room around noon with a weird feeling in my gut. About 30 minutes later I realized that I missed the EAA breakfast. We were both home, up early, and should have made it over.

Now I have to wait a stinkin month to try again. I've been meaning to come.

Exact same thing for me. I was just hanging out at home, when it dawned on me it was the first Saturday. I keep meaning to make it over, but I'm usually either out of town or otherwise obligated. Last Saturday? Just plain ol' forgot!

Are you going to check out the DC3 Saturday?

I wish. I'll be in CRG for the night after 3 legs. 5 on Sunday.
