Pizza Foundation Marfa needs your help

I put up a small token for great pizza... Wonder if I'll ever get back out that way.

I never ate there, but I used to pass by it every day for a couple of months while I was working at the marfa aerostat site. Hope they do well with the campaign.

There are no pizzas that can better those created in the kitchens of Steinholme.

Speaking of marfa, I'll be there mis February.

I've landed in alpine before so I'm somewhat familiar with the area.

Since I may be arriving at night and from Houston, would flying into marfa be any more or less of a hassle than alpine?

I ask this because alpine airport has mountains/hills around it on 2-3 sides.

Thanks for the input!

As this claim cannot be independently verified.....It must be disregarded. :nono: Although I am sure Steinholme pizza has to be much, much higher in quality than Little Caesar's nastiness.

The hills are certainly deserving of consideration, although for the most part it is not a huge concern even at night. (Add weather and my answer changes significantly.) There have not been a huge number of hill-hitting accidents there, although I recall a story of one decades ago in imc.
An erudite pilot friend of mine said there is great comfort in simply performing the iap to such airports at night if able - and that makes great sense to me.

The Alpine hills are a few miles from the airport, east, south, through west, mainly. When I arrive from the east, I stay at 8.5 til past the Glass Mnts...til ~5-7mi from BWR or TIFME then down to 7, and turn inbound from about there. If there is a moon you may not have to do any of this but it is <1/2 and waning after the 12th.

Marfa does have a little more clearance but night would not deter most folks from going to Alpine if that's their destination. However, if your comfort level says 'Marfa' that's great too.

A go round on 19 or 23 at Alpine at night is ok, as long as you have the climb rate and don't lollygag and wait miles to make your turn back to the north.

I'd actually prefer to land in marfa instead of alpine if the rental car can be picked up in marfa instead.

The problem is the mountains between alpine and marfa and getting over them in my pa28-180.

Coming in at 8500 wouldnt be an issue. Its leaving heading home that wouldbe a problem.

Fly climbing in known clear airspace over the airport/town until you have the MEA covered and turn on course.

yea there is plenty of space to climb up before you head out.

hopefully i can get back to Marfa this fall.

Speaking of Marfa, has anyone ever stopped at the Marfa Lights place? I was always too busy during the prime times when I was in the area, but found it interesting that it would gather such a crowd that they actually built a place to look from.

Yes and it's actually very interesting to see, if you're into that sort of thing. It's perplexing trying to figure out what they are as well as a nice quiet place to hang out and watch the stars.

Last time I was there an amateur astronomer had his telescope out and I was able to see Saturn and its rings.

But even without the telescope its a nice place to go.

Wow...I love the fake magazine covers on their kickstarter page where they're attempting to make it look like they've made the cover of Vogue, Town & Country, and others.

Unless I'm misinterpreting something...like intended humor...that's pretty damning.

Decent slice of pizza, and a quirky town overall. Never flew in Marfa, but I did notice several gliders cruising above town when we were out there last.

Also watched two Antelope fight with a fence between them...

Several year ago we attended a wedding in Marfa. I could not find a car to rent in Marfa so I rented one in Alpine and paid $125 to have it delivered to Marfa airport.

Huh. I'll have to make a point to spend more time exploring the area if I go back. I don't work on the aerostats any more, so not sure if that will happen. It's a bit out of the way.

The Marfa lights are pretty cool. I have been twice and saw the orbs both times. On one occasion there were jokesters out there with lanterns.
Regardless of the source of lights it is a neat place to hang out when the weather is good. I have never seen so many stars in my life. seeing the Milky way was pretty cool and a good experience for my kids.

I took a flight I will never forget with a POA member out of Alpine. It was like flying over the moon. A local pilot made a few videos you can check out on you-tube. It was quite beautiful. I need to plan another trip back out there. Better act fast. Once spring passes it's a bit to hot for most folks!

so I rented one in Alpine and paid $125 to have it delivered to Marfa airport.

That sounds excessive.

Then the business side of me got to thinking about it.
To get that car to Marfa airport meant two people, two cars drove 30miles, dropped off your car; then one car, back to Alpine. 90 miles of travel (its ~30mi each way, one car did 60mi the other 30mi) and about 1.5 hours x 2 people.

Double it for the return trip; 180 miles and 6 man hours is the total.

Not sure anyone could do much better!
Best solution would be cars at Marfa...and I think they do have courtesy cars at least, now. TimeCar is gone from Marfa.
edit: I recall a note saying the hotel will shuttle people to town and see on airnav something about a shuttle van. If you read the comments you will see where Ron took someone to town, too.

A ride with Ron Lewis- to be treasured, for certain!

Thanks everyone, they made it.
Now, does anyone know how pledges translate into $ on these?

I was quoted $125 as well. Ill be landing in alpine instead and picking up,the car there.

When you pledge during the campaign, you are directed to an Amazon page to enter your credit card or other payment details. If they meet their funding pledge goal, the money is automatically pulled from whatever source you provided. A percent goes to Kickstarter, and the rest is sent to the project owner.
