nothing worth talkin bout.
nothing worth talkin bout.

Not the greatest picture, but you can get an idea of my size from it.

nothing worth talkin bout.
You certainly do have a topic.
Lets look at this...
I now weigh 205 lbs. I used to weigh 140 (back in my twenties) Now personally I don't think I look that much different (obese) I do have a larger belly (mostly beer I think) and my waiste size has gone from 29-30 to 36.
Here's my question. I see these guys on UFC and shows like that who are incredible fit, and very well built. They weigh much less than I do. Muscle has always been said to be heavier than fat, so why is someone who clearly has much more muscle than I do, who is larger, and more physically fit that much lighter than I (talking 30 - 40 lbs by my height - 5'10")
I really can't believe I would have that much fat. If you were to meet me, you would never say I was overwieght.
Does the fat on my waist weigh that much, or am I really carrying around 20 lbs of matter in my intestines as the infomercials would lead you to believe.
Sorry for the gross thres, but you wanted something to talk about, and I really would like to know.

Dunno 'bout all that, but you hang out with pretty company!
That side, I have become amazed at the sheer numbers of genuinely obese people one encounters these days, and it has most notably gotten worse in the last fifteen years or so.
As for me, I am sort of shocked at how difficult it is to shed those twenty or so pounds I am carrying, almost entirely in my belly.
I need to lose more weight, but portioning seems to work for me. I think that is the real basis behind Jenny Craig, Weightwatchers, etc.
I used to think that.
What you can see around your waist is an obvious sign of a problem that has become systemic. You have fat permeating your organs as well. Part of the shortness of breath you have attributed to carrying around extra weight is contributed to by the extra fat clogging up airsacks in your lungs and extra layers of fat under your ribs, all reducing your lung capacity. Your liver is changing from a rich red color toward a slightly greenish-grey hue as fat attaches itself. And your heart is becoming marbled with fat. Fat is building up in the spaces between your organs, squeezing them and pushing them out of shape. We all know about the danger of fat that is starting to build up inside the walls of your arteries.
At least from your photo you don't appear morbidly obese, and neither am I. You do not have to look like an underwear model to be basically healthy.
As you can surmise from my avatar, I have recently had a physician draw these visuals for me. Getting back to my athletic size (110-115 lb) is not even a concept, but I'm working to lose 60 lb.Thanks for the horrible visual Aunt Peggy
Time for me to start working on it I guess.

If we are to keep this thread going, can one of the moderators rename it, or move it to a more appropriate sounding topic?
I'm new here and certainly don't want to go down in peoples memories as the disgusting guy with fat marbling through his heart and lungs...
I weighed-in this morning at 136 lbs(5'6"). All-you-can-eat buffets are great. China Rose, Brunswick, Maine, has been voted Best(in its category) for years. Yup; I can "pinch an inch," but I vary day to day between 136 - 140 lbs. It's been that way since I was a Junior in high school(1960-1961). Metabolism, I'm told. (I'm surprised I could spell it, let alone understanding it.) Friends(??) have told me that most of my fat is in my head.
HR (but it is amazing, the obesity of the attendees seen at the buffet tables, and they never neglect the dessert tables)

I hate your frakking gutz. Please die.
Harsh words indeed my friend!! As you know, I'm always working hard to pack on a few more pounds!
Gary
Obviously just a joke from the majority who pick up weight if they so much as look at a chiclet.
Yeah, I know, just couldn't resist ragging on you a bit.
Gary
Rag undeserved, as the original comments are too richly deserved. "Oh, I can eat anything and not gain an ounce". Die yuppy scum.
Gary's Patented Diet Tonic consists of organic petro-distillate vapors, carbon monoxide, nicotine, and ethanol. Try some, and you too will think "Cherokee 140? Yeah, I can put my family of four in there!"
Cheers,

gonna get punched at the Fly-B-Q next year
Somebody above mentioned portion control. Spot on. A simple solution that works is to use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate at meal times, and leave white space between the food, and don't go back for seconds. You won't die, or go hungry. You will lose weight, when combined with drinking more water and walking more.
AMEN! Portion control! When my bride (of 20 years) and I go out we split an entrée. The food portions in this country are simply obscene! There is enough fat and calories for 4 people in one meal!
Eating is not a sport! Put the fork down!

This past Wed, I ran 23 miles. I trained for triathlons all summer, right now I'm working on the Philly Marathon. On average I put in about 30mi running, another 20 biking, and 1-2mi swimming per week.
I eat whole grains, veggies, fruit - good stuff. NO juice, no soda. I've lost 20 lbs this YEAR. I still have 30 to go to get under the overweight BMI cut off. It's all about portion control now, but I still get po'd thinking about how much exercise I do (intense exercise - we're talking speedwork, serious pace) and how slowly the weight is coming off.
My legs are like iron. I can feel muscles that I didn't even know existed. And yet, that gut won't go.
It .. really does not work like that.Whoo man!!! That's a lot of work. Sure you really want to waste that many heartbeats on wearing out running shoes? After all, we have a fixed number of them.
It .. really does not work like that.
Here are a few things that might help. People are under the misconception that eating less is better.<SNIP>
Eating less is one way to lose weight. If you take in more calories than you burn, some of those calories are stored as fat.
If you excercise (burn calories at least as fast as they come in), weright gain is stopped or reversed.
I'm not disputing the rest (spreading the calories over several meals or the excercise). But describing eating less to lose weight as being a misconception- I'll disagree with that statement.
The best combination is a reasonable caloric intake combined with reasonable excercise.
