Who will be your personal pilot?

Actually, if I was THAT wealthy, I'd hire both a pilot and a co-pilot. My pick would be....

Pilot - Cap'n Ron
Copilot - Rotor & Wing

And then I'd have them fly my personal ATC controller, Roncachamp, all around the country.

Now that I'd pay to watch.

I picked Martha out of that line up. I figured there would be no danger of my wife worrying about me spending overnights away at strange destinations shacked up with our female pilot! :yikes:
Actually, I've got about 700 hours flying single pilot in a Citation, so I have more jet time than most of the choices, except Martha. :dunno:

There's you, Mari, Greg, Wayne...

Okay guys you're a wealthy philanthropist and have no inclination towards being a pilot. However you need a good pilot to fly your very expensive jet. Who would you choose from the list below to be your personal pilot.

Good point but this is assuming those mentioned have the qualifications to pilot a jet.

You didn't mention that in the original post, so it looks like you picked a bunch of people who are mostly unqualified for the job.

Qualification to fly a 'very expensive jet' is relatively cheap to get in comparison to the jet, it's just a type rating away. The guys flying AF447 were all 'qualified' to fly very expensive jets, yet none of them was worth a crap when it started going wrong. Qualification and ability are two different things. You can always take someone with ability and get them qualified, the converse does not necessarily hold true.

Good point, but why would I choose to qualify someone when I could pick someone who has both qualification and ability already? Saves me the cost of the type rating. Besides, I'm the theoretical wealthy businessman who can afford a very expensive jet.

Screw it, I'll just buy that Lear 23, hop in, and fly it single pilot without any training. Can't be that hard, and then everyone will be able to hear my arrival.

Just make sure you use the "zoom climb out" technique for maximum safety.

Since standard climb can do 4,000+ FPM, I think 10k is possible. Slower than an RV, but hey it's only a jet. :mad2:

If you can find someone with known ability that you trust with discretion and don't mind spending a bunch of time with, sure, why not. That's not always an easy task, the simplest of those requirements to procure reliably is qualification. When you are a personal pilot/captain for an individual and travel with them a great deal, there is much more that goes with the job than operating the machine, heck, I've spent as much time at the blackjack table with some owners as I have running them around in their boat. A Type Rating costs less than the fuel for a single trans oceanic trip in a Very Expensive Jet, if you have the money to operate a VEJ, getting the right person a TR is nothing, besides, not all training and 'qualifications' are equal; when you get a person qualified, you know what training program they have undergone.

:lol::rofl:...

Come on out to Jackson Hole in that Lear and I will bail you out of jail...:D:D

Hey, Connie Kalitta did it (although I think it was a 24 or 25).

Of course, since we have two pilots in the family we could just both get typed and make it simpler. My wife would probably be insurable, not so sure about me.

Connie wasn't typed, he just hopped in a LR24 (or 25) and took off. Unfortunately the FAA found out. :nonod:

Since I don't pretend to be invincible super-pilot who knows everything, I'd actually want to get the type rating. And fly with someone who had previous Lear experience.

Okay let me be more precise. Considering all these people were qualified who would be your first choice? This is also considering you have no interest in being the pilot and no inclination.

I voted for Martha King because she is a pilot and I have never heard of any of these other people. Who are they?

That group my dear sir is a highly respected group of pilots. For instance David White is the POA wonderboy who just might be one of the youngest to have ever received his commercial license. In fact the rumor is he doesn't even shave yet!!! Jesse is not named "MR. CFI" for nothing. He is what many believe to be the epitome of what a CFI should be. In fact he fly's aircraft that necessitates him wearing a parachute. Need I say more?!?!?! As for Ron Levy he's just "tiger" and a man who is by the book in every respect. As for Henning? Well, if you want an adventure in exciting and foreign lands he's your man.

Have you checked you chemistry lately? :D

By virtue of the FARs, I am tied for youngest commercial pilot, youngest private pilot, and youngest to solo a powered plane.

I went with Martha. Nothing against anyone else but if she can pass all the license tests and do a pretty good job (IMHO) instructing people how to do it as well I presume she'd be pretty good pilot. I think it'd be fun to talk to her about her flying career as well. Should I put my flame suit on now?
I was thinking Martha as well but then I considered that she might start talking and to be honest I've heard her speak often enough that I'd prefer to not repeat the experience, especially in the confines of an airplane.

Henning might be interesting albeit a bit too willing to ignore the rules but I think I've heard the majority of his stories and if I ever employed him it seems more fitting that it would be in the capacity of a ship's captain.

Compared to the others, Ron would just be too boring and if I ever needed a rule bent it wouldn't work out.

At this point I think David is a bit too under-experienced, OTOH he might let me fly the plane now and then.

That leaves Jesse and since like Ron and Martha, he's a CFI, we could both log PIC time (once we were type rated). And IME his temperament is sufficiently wilder than Ron's and adequately tamer than Henning's so I had to go with him. Besides he still owes me for getting him a job several years ago so I'd stand a better chance of getting him to do whatever I wanted pilot-wise.

Lance, you said exactly what I was thinking.

Yep. Sweet ole Matha stealing airplanes. She even looks guilty. :)

..and for that I thank you..as that job ultimately launched my career and I doubt I'd be where I am now had I not had that opportunity.
