RDU App: “You say what now?”
SHADY02: “He just ran out the back of the plane.”
RDU App: “So you don’t… you don’t have a copilot you said?”
SHADY02: “No, he just jumped out the back of the plane.”
RDU App: “Uh, Roger.”
SHADY02: “Would you like me to circle where he left at?”
RDU App: “Uh, say that again?”
SHADY02: “Would you like me to circle where he got out at, or you got me on track?”
RDU App: “Ah, we still got you on track, do- did you need something else?”
SHADY02: “No, the dude literally jumped out of the back of the plane without a parachute.”
RDU App: “Ah, let me (stay with?) you, did you need to do something else, circle or something, ah?”
SHADY02: “No, I need to land, I’m just making you aware you’re gonna have a dead body out where I just called you at. He just jumped out the back of the plane.”
RDU App: “Roger, just continue on you(r)… heading zero-five-zero.”
SHADY02: “zero-five-zero, zero-two.”

You should listen for voice inflection. Crazy.
Or lack thereof. I'd really like to hear this from at least one other source, as it's disturbing. As is the flat affect of the pilot.
Edit: I really mean that I'd like confirmation from authorities that these are the actual ATC comms. It would be cruel to make this up, but also not unprecedented.

Seems annoyed more than anything

No. You said he sounded to calm
I said he should have been calm.

Why would it matter if I listened. I trust you. He was cold as an ice cube.

I’m saying he should have been calm and that it isn’t an indication of something bad.

Some of the calmest dudes I ever talked to were taking crazy amounts of effective incoming fire. They were solely focused on getting a bomb on target as quickly as possible.

If this was a check ride as someone said above, maybe they just met and he didn’t have a lot of emotional investment with the other guy, as you might if you’ve worked together as a crew.

Some people have an inordinate ability to silo, revert to cold processing, and focusing in stressful moments: we had a really bad landing and we have no right gear, so the check ride is over. Emergency, my aircraft. The guy just got up and jumped out of the back without a ‘chute. No way he’d survive that. I still need to land the damaged plane. Processing and emotions later.

Not sure there can be another source closer to what happened, especially reporting it a few moments after it happened. If your questioning the authenticity of the recoding I wouldn’t cast much doubt on it. And yes, it’s disturbing.

I've been following this since I saw it reported on the local news (a few minutes after it happened) and just listened to this and it sure sounds like someone in shock and disbelief to me. I'm personally waiting to hear what the pilot's statement is on this one.

Can you imagine what was going through the controllers mind when they got that first call.??

But seriously.

I listened to it. I don't find anything surprising about his demeanor or what was said if this recording is, in fact, true. Do you expect him to be sobbing to the controller?

He's clearly stunned but also actively dealing with an emergency situation and preserving his own life - remember his airplane just had a serious incident and he's lost a wheel. He doesn't sound out of breath or angry like they were struggling or something. Not definitive proof, but in my mind the copilot just hopping out of the airplane (or falling out in some way that from the pilot's perspective looked that way) seems to be the most plausible scenario at this point. Wild. It does also track with the reporting of him jumping out - one or two bad journos saying that and it being completely false wouldn't surprise me but it was reported all over this way. So there must be at least some sort of tangible evidence that that's what happened (even if later found to be inaccurate).

glad i got this out there for you all to discuss. i got this from a pilot friend of mine in the rdu area.

My apologies to "cj maitland" if their intentions are true, but I suspect spamming as well. I've looked pretty hard for the RDU Tower audio and haven't found anything definitive.

Add me to the skeptical list. With all of the aviation geeks out there this audio shows up on what looks like a music site??

The controller's voice in the above audio matches the voice heard working RDU approach control during the time of the event.

Another wild speculation.

You just never know when mental illness will rear its ugly face.

And yes, I believe the pilots voice. Sounds like a good head to have in the cockpit when things suddenly go bad. It will not be a good outcome if the pilot panics, stops thinking and forgets to fly the plane. I know a few pilots that should take lessons from him.

Won’t surprise me in the near future to see the only initial medical become a third class, with second and first class becoming way more onerous than they are today and requiring continuous history with the AME and the FAA.

It's not that I don't trust a new guy posting a non aviation related link. Or that I don't/can't trust any reporter anymore.

It's just such a wild story. If there was ever a moment to say WTF....that would be it.

Sadly, that might be it.

We want it to be just an accident, an aviation blunder. Something that happened to a copilot who was intending to sort out an airplane problem - sort it out very poorly perhaps but at least rationally

We don’t want it to be suicide.

But that radio call from the pilot sounds like a report of a suicide, maybe just seconds after it happened.

Lots of context missing, starting with had an emergency been declared yet?

If you believe the audio linked above to be real it sure sounds like they had prior Emergency related dialogue with the controller.

Yeah, I’m making no assumptions about any of this.

listen, i'm not a pilot and there's no need to disparage me. i just enjoy aviation. i live very close to camp lejuene so i see some interesting ones. that CASA has flown over my house several times. i've seen it drop marines out the back. i have some pilot friends and aviation geek friends. i was just trying to pass some information on that you all might not have heard yet and obviously some of you hadn't. being that i was new to the site, i couldn't post the link, even copying it as plain text. to be honest, i despise getting email. just ask my mother, i never read or respond to hers either. i just wanted one of you to ask for it to get it here. but what's done is done. i will strive to be less helpful in the future. stay high, CJ
