Yesterday I have decided to go to the local Starbucks, (next to my home airport) and to snap few pictures of the airplanes. I've done quite of few times before and was very surprised when police approached me ...

So here a picture. The Starbucks located short final of runway 24 next to the Carlsbad Mcclellan Airport..The guy with the camera standing in front of the coffee shop taking picture...Well he must a be a terrorist! :hairraise: What else could it be? :eek:

Police officer walked to me and asked "what am I doing here". "Taking picture of the airplanes! Is that illegal? "I inquired .."No" the officer replied. "So what is going on?". "Can I see you ID?". OK, here is my driver license, here is my pilot license..Any more question? I would imagine checking my ID is sufficient, but not.. You would be surprised! The police officers continue interrogating me ! I've been asked what airplane I fly? do I rent or own airplane? how much do I pay for airplane? how far do I fly? how often do I fly? where do I live? How long do I fly? why did I move from one address to another? Why my address on pilot license is different from my driver license? Where did I buy a camera...

So do I live in US or freaking North Korea ? :sad:


Three times police officer confirmed there was nothing illegal in taking pictures of airplanes; nevertheless, she continue to interrogate me after my ID was checked and confirmed by dispatch.

Sure I'm a patient person and not being an ******* by answering all questions police officer. I understand that ID check is OK, but WTF with that interrogating ? That has been really ****ed me off.

After the whole deal of asking me question, police officer left and suggested that is not a good idea to take picture of airplanes during rush hour because American public a bit sensitive on guys with the camera at local Starbucks...I guess it would less suspicious I would come at night climb on the three and snap few pictures of landing traffic! :D

What is going on with this world?

You were more patient than I would have been. Is photographing aircraft illegal? No? Good bye officer, and have a nice day.

You posted a picture of the plane you were photographing, but you didn't post one of yourself. Maybe you look suspicious. Were you "furtive" when you got your coffee? If you wouldn't have been wearing a robe and a turban no one would have noticed.:D
 
Maybe because it was at Starbucks. They're currently not PC because the allow people to carry guns there. Must be they allow cameras too. No wonder people are upset.

It just dawned on me that maybe she had the hots for you. That's a possibility.

Q: I've been asked what airplane I fly?

A: PA28-140 or M20C or ahh just an ole spam can.

Q: how much do I pay for airplane?

A: Well that can range from about 40 AMUS on up to thousands of AMUs depending on if you go Ultralite, LSA, Experimenal Single Engine Piston or Trubine.

Q:how.far do I fly?

A: Until I get to the field where I'm gonna land or ahhh It depends if I'm full tanks or up to the tabs or somewhere near the tabs Certainly no more than I can with out going below legal reserves

Q: how often do I fly?

A: Not often enough thats for sure.,

Q: where do I live?

A: In a van down by the river.

Q: How long do I fly?

A: Again until I get to the field where I'm gonna land or depends on the mission but not longer that the range on my bladder.

ANY pilot would understand each and every answer.
 
Except for podunk absolute nowhere airports, I have completely given up photographing airplanes or airports. I'm also cutting back on using airport parking areas for overnight stops like I've been doing for a few centuries now too. There have been way too many run in with the gustappo in the last few years...

9-11-2001 was almost a decade ago and it was all airliners. Get the *&#$ over it already.

are you sure you weren't a bit jumpy from the caffeine? :)

Not sure what I would have done. Was she hot? Did you ask if she had any interest in learning to fly?

Nope, didn't drink coffee. She wasn't hot, mid 40th, fat.... Definitely not perspective student pilot more like good TSA candidate..

P.S. She thought flight instructors make a lot of money...

Exactly. The cop was there to determine if some law was being broken. Talk to her long enough and she just might discover one.

So you are saying she was desperate? She is in her 40s, a little heavy,maybe divorced. She gets a call to check some guy out taking pictures of airplanes. So instead of a terrorist she finds a young handsome guy in a track suit,wearing Oakley sunglasses and taking pictures of airplanes with an expensive camera. She discovers that he is a pilot no less. No doubt about it, she was hitting on you. :thumbsup:

I'm saying she was not hot. :rolleyes2: Sure I wasn't dressed like on the photo in January. It's a mid July in San Diego after all :cornut:

I'm not cop, but I'm sure there more better ways hitting on people other than exercise her determination to dig something out (just as Jack Spectre pointed out)

The whole thing is highly ridiculous. What is wrong with taking general aviation aircraft photos? Did I mentioned that another cop arrive shortly after her as part of the backup? WTF are they really bored or something?

You were at a coffee shop. The only way to attract more Cops would be to have been in front of a Donut shop.

Well, she doesn't have to be hot to hit on you. Not hot girls hit on guys too. The other cop was probably her supervisor and he was checking to see what was taking so long. You're lucky. If he hadn't shown up, she might have cuffed you, thrown you in the back seat, and had her way with you.

Of course, I am not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice by any stretch of the imagination... but if it was a consensual encounter, you had no reason to give up your ID (the officer admitted that it wasn't illegal to take photos). Just something to remember in the future, but also know that some cops probably won't take kindly to you invoking your rights in response to their request... So you have to decide if it's worth your time or if you're better off just humoring the officer.

I tell you another things! Cops like this shop a lot. There was a case when few month ago I was taking pictures of airplanes at the same spot. The whole bunch of cops were sitting on the patio and enjoyed their cappuccino! No questions, no suspicious looks, nothing...!

Those two officers who approached me two days ago are some kind of nut case...

Blaming the two officers you interacted with for the current atmosphere of paranoia which apparently lead to the telephone call to the police about you and your activity, is like blaming you personally for the current unwarranted and unfortunate proliferation of cheesy-looking track suits like yours being worn in public...when it can clearly be blamed on the Italian-Americans as a group.
