P51-skyraider midair

He certainly runs that 3350 rich enough..

Pilot bailing out of the Mustang. Notice the damage to the bottom of the fuselage.

The Mustang pilot probably never had a chance to figure out what went wrong.

Just goes to show how tough that Douglas was

Troy - best link yet. WOW....

Classic example of British understatement.

"I bailed out at extremely low altitude. The motivation was rather high." or similar ... :D

I wonder if the controls where still intact and could he have landed it.
He doesn't say in the clip, but I'd guess some control cables were damaged.

And he was low... no time to wait and see what it "wants to do". But if there had been time, and the stick and rudder pedals still felt OK, he wouldn't really know for sure how much integrity was left in that portion of the fuselage. At any rate, he's not new to the type, and it probably seemed like the best option to him. I think I'd do the same, in a midair situation where I can't see the damage.
The Sandy pilot carried on because he could see what was up, and knew he had a good chance of landing it safely.

I wondered the same thing, but can't fault him for his quick decision making considering the altitude. Looking at the news footage, he got whacked pretty hard. Who knows how the controls were behaving? I'd hope my training would be good enough to make the decision that quickly.

He was also flying a Douglas product and may have been aware of their reputation for continuing to fly without significant portions of the wing.

Understated in a manner unique to the British. My reaction would have been that I'm very happy to be alive and when I catch up with the sky raider driver he'll be wishing he was dead.

what is the puff of smoke/fluid immediately after collision, 2:19 of post #12?

Check this video out; includes the P-51 taxiing out for its last departure. Warbird formation grass takeoffs? Priceless.
