Too soon? I don't think so! It's 171 days, 22 hours and I'm ready to go now. I got my official invite to be on the EAA Photo Team again this year, so I'm pretty excited.

I've been lucky enough to be able to fly every year, either in my plane or someone else's. A friend of mine who drives to OSH, leaving from the same town I do, asked me how much it costs me, so I did the math. I live near Austin, Texas.

Driving (Google Maps) (Round Trip)
2486 Miles / 16 MPG = 155 Gallons * $2.65/Gallon = $411
39.5 Hours

Flying (Round Trip)
13 Hours * 13 GPH = 169 Gallons * $5.00/Gallon = $845
1816 Miles

Of course these are rough numbers and assume no delays, but roughly I spend over $400 more to fly, but save 26 Hours. I was surprised that I save 670 miles and this is not straight-line, but using actual airports I stop at. The time savings alone is worth the extra money.

We stay in a rented RV (the travel trailer kind) in a private campground (Sleepy Hollow) which is why we have to pay a deposit. If you camp in Scholler there’s no deposit but you can prebuy your camping credentials or pay when you arrive but the sites themselves are first come first serve with the choice spots going the first day Scholler opens on or about June 30th. If you aircraft camp you just show up (monitor the campground status beforehand to see if they are accepting campers— volume and/ground conditions dictate this) and pay for camping when you register— no prebuy option like in Scholler.

We had a fun road trip. I really like driving (except around Chicago, that sucked) anyway, so either one is good.

Two years ago we flew commercial. If we’d have taken the RV-8, we’d have gotten there an hour sooner for the same or less cost, and we wouldn’t have gotten covid and missed all but the first two days.
 
Planning on driving there this year. I’d fly, but I want to order some long pieces of spruce and sheets of plywood to pick up from ACS and it wouldn’t fit in the RV-12.
 
Planning on flying up from Central Texas again this year and join up with the Cessna’s to Oshkosh for the mass arrival/camping in the N. 40
 
I booked my Airbnb the day I got home last year.
I plan on being there the whole week
 
Thinking of flying there commercially, but don't know:
- which days are best (plan to stay 3 full days)
- where to stay and how to transport myself from there

If you only have 3 days, Tue, Wed, Thur would likely get you the most bang for your buck. Night Airshow is a must.
Ubers are plentiful and you can stay in Appleton or Neenah in an Airbnb. Camping onsite is cool but it can be a little "Woodstock" sometimes.
