O-320-D2A Oil Cooler Winterization Plate

Hey Everybody,

I have a 1965 Cherokee 140 which has been upgraded to a 160HP O-320-A2D and I would like to put the winterization plate on the oil cooler but I'm not having any luck on figuring out what size screws it's going to need an whether the assembly will need any kind of lock washers. I have included a photo of the plate. Any help would be appreciated :)

Get out some duct tape instead. IIRC they are #10 PKs, just carry an 8,10,&12 to the plane and see which fits the holes in the cooler. A lock washer of some form would be appropriate, typically a spline type on this kind of application. You could look in the Lycoming Parts Manual if you want the exact recommended hardware, that would the the most proper.

I'm going to continue to spew my mechanical ignorance by asking what a PK is. I'm assuming it's a unit of measurement but I have no idea. Tried googling this first but it seems every screw in the world comes as a 10 pack :D

No, the #10 is a measurement, the PK is a screw type/thread. "Sheet Metal" is another more generic nomenclature for the same basic type.
 
Excellent, I can handle that. Any idea on the length? That was really my big concern.

Sheet metal through sheet metal and a spline washer I doubt it needs more than 1/4" I would use duct tape though, it's easier to adjust.

I "think" they are 10-32 x 3/8"...

I would use Blue Loctite instead of a lockwasher... They only lockwasher that fits is the "star" kind and they chew into the aluminum plate.. IMHO...

Ps... I thought turning a 150 hp into a 160 hp motor makes it a 0-320-D2G
 
James- is there an EAA chapter on the field or nearby? Or wander over to an open hangar on the weekend where someone is building. Take the plate, ask if they know what size screw and lock nut and washer. To be honest, the odds are the plate is old, as is the engine, so the real answer is whatever size fits at the time.

What temperatures are you flying in? What is the oil temperature when you fly in the winter VS summer? What oil do you use? Has someone told you the addition of the oil cooler blocking plate," is what you need to do"? What is oil pressure on start up? Do you pull the prop through several times before you start engine? Do you preheat engine?

Personally, school yourself on the answers to these questions before blocking off the oil cooler.

My O320 runs great all year without such modifications. If you feel you want to add the blank off plate ask you A&P to help you out as you can not install without a log book entry.

I like the plate on when temps average 40 or below. That gets my oil temp near where I want it.

You could do some trial and error with test screws. I got a few extras at the hardware store a few years ago, don't recall the size.
 
I own a '69 Cherokee 140, and use duct tape as well. (the install was demonstrated and performed by my AP.....Henning isn't kidding)

The plate and airplane became separated before I owned her, and had come across a drawing and was going to fabricate one, AP suggested and installed it before I could unfold the drawing from my pocket.

With all due respect, it was actually that shiny aluminum tape (ya know....they stuff they use on ducts), not the gray cloth like stuff....

3M Scotch Brand 3311 aluminum foil tape is 3.6 mil thickness. It's better than the oddball Home Depot brand and the adhesive works well in a wide temperature range.

That stuff will work perfectly for blocking incoming air to the cooler.. The only draw back is the adhesive left behind that needs to be cleaned off the cooler fins for summer operation... Altho it is easielly done with a tooth brush and some MEK or Acetone...:yes:
