Non TSO'd radio

Unless you're a commercial operator, you don't need a TSO comm radio.
If it's tray compataible with the KY97A it's a "minor modification."

Unless you're an A&P (and presuming this is a normally certificated aircraft), you'll need someone else to sign off the change.

Yes. It is a slide in replacement. I'm looking here on the field for a radio to slide in to make sure it is the radio, not something else. $580 seems like a pretty good deal for two decade later technology.

And, I think it is remotely connected to the landing light!

It's not a minor mod, it is no mod at all. all you log is the radio change and slide in replacements are a pilot/owner action by FAR 43-A c, items 1-31

radios that are compatable with the rack and harness are considered authorized replacement parts.

There is no need for an A&P to sign off the slide-out/slide-in (that still falls under "preventive maintenance"), but you do need an A&P to sign off the change to the equipment list unless that list already has the new radio type incorporated in it. The Grumman world has been through this a lot with TKM/Michel MX-11's going in to replace the Narco Com11's that many of the 1970's Grummans came with.

Yep. Even some slide in/out alterations could require a W&B revision in addition to that. Tranponder slide in/out alterations require 91.411 test.

Right -- if the weight of the new radio is more than one pound different than the old one, a revision to the empty weight/cg in the W&B data would also be required, and that means an A&P's signature.

Tranponder slide in/out alterations require 91.411 test.
...and fall outside the scope of preventive maintenance anyway.

Seems to happen all the time.... "but so and so did the test last year" Funny, the part # and serial listed on the 91.411 test is not the transponder in the airplane.

R&W made a comment on another thread earlier today about not being able to stop everyone from doing everything they're not supposed to be doing. Humans... :sigh:
