looking for recommendations on a stop for fuel and possibly overnight between New Jersey and Illinois. Anyone have any recommendations ? Anywhere with hotel close to airport?

Where in Jersey and where in Ill?

Carrol county KTSO is a good food stop en route with cheap fuel. A little inconvenient to get to the hotels without a cab but locals will give you a ride.

Unless you are flying an ultralight, it's a one-day trip. :)

A bit out of the way, but stop in Dayton, OH and see the flight museum.

Flying or driving?
If flying, it can be done in a single day as noted above. I assume flying due to the desire to be near airports.

If driving, how long are you willing to drive in a day? I've driven from Bridgewater, NJ to Gary, IN in a day. If I were making that drive between 39N and KSPI, I'd stop at Indianapolis. I've stayed at the Hampton Inn near Lilly several times; nothing special but nothing bad either.

I second the detour to the USAF museum if possible. Leave a couple of days for that visit too.

We are flying. Guess we are making it in a single day.

Fayette County Ohio (I23) looks pretty good. Nice new and clean terminal. FBO with low fuel price ($3.98 self serve) and at least minor maintenance capability (http://www.fayette-co-oh.com/airport.html). It's off the direct route some, but only adds 6 nm to the total distance. Fly it in one day and avoid the hotel.

Another option with slightly more expensive fuel is Madison County (KUYF http://co.madison.oh.us/airport/). Looks like they have more extensive maintenance capability and a crew car. There are some hotels nearby. Not the best.

If you really need the hotel, you'll be near Columbus Ohio so you can either go to an airport closer to there with more expensive fuel and stop, or go to I 23 or KUYF for fuel and hop over to a Columbus airport for a room (unless it is a Ohio State football home game weekend when they'll be booked). I recommend Bolton Field (KTZR). No landing fee (don't know about overnight fee), nice FBO, not crowded. Buy at least a few gallons of fuel from them.

I'll second TZR. Been a few years, but last time i was there they had a decent BBQ joint right next to the fbo. Fbo was good
