I know they changed "taxi into position and hold " to "line up and wait". But when did "hold position at " become used? For example I was givin a takeoff clearance and after I had responded started onto the runway when the controller had called me and said takeoff clearance cancelled hold position at Lima. Now to be clear I was partially on the runway by maybe a nose. It's just something I've never heard before.

Well they first need to cancel your take off clearance. "N12345, take off clearance cancelled (reason)." Second, they want to make sure you continue to hold short of the runway. Mentioning the actual taxiway isn't required but apparently this controller thought it necessary.

They didn't change "taxi into position and hold" to "line up and wait". They changed "taxi into position and hold" to "position and hold", then changed "position and hold" to "line up and wait". "Hold position" has been standard phraseology for a long time. If a location is included the book phraseology is "hold position on..."

he'd a been more correct to have said "hold short of runway##" after cancelling the takeoff clearance. Maybe he saw that you were a "nose over" the hold line already so decided to say "hold position" because it was to late to hold short. Just wondering, what happened next? Did someone land or depart while you were holding position there?

no just waiting for the 3 min weight turbulence mark. There was actually 2 aircraft on the runway at that time. I was an intersection departure and another was behind me at full length
