Mostly venting. I am about 1 hour short of the dual time needed for my instrument rating, and about 23 hours short of the additional simulated instrument time required. My CFII is busy with other pursuits for a while but I want to keep sharp on what I've learned as well as finishing up the hours. That way, when he has some time, we can finish up without a dangling hours requirement.

Does anyone have any creative solutions to build up those hours without having to con a limited supply of busy local pilots into going for lots of boring flights as a passenger in the right seat? Maybe there's a message board out there for pilots who need the PIC hours for their instrument rating or commercial pilot license that I could match up with.

Where are you located?
Western North Dakota. I should probably just fly over to UND in Grand Forks, take a tour of the aviation department, and hand out cards to first- and second-year students.

There was a guy posting last week trying to give away free CFI services(he needed PIC hours), where'd he go? I don't know if he ever said where he was located though. I think everyone ran him off with their belligerence.

Shucks. I was too busy flying last week to participate in anything belligerent here. :)

They sure did. The poor guy just wanted to build hours.

Probably too far to make it worth coming to Wisconsin, but I'd happily fly safety pilot for anyone needing help. So, in case you find yourself in the area... let me know!

If I can't find someone closer than Milwaukee, I'll take you up on that!

Three words: Civil Air Patrol.

I can't emphasize enough how many safety pilots I've found that way, and how much I've done. I'm a real bastidge, too. Count on a GPS or PFD failure when you most need it, or an engine failure in low (simulated) IMC.

Hell, I may be doing my commercial night dual cross country for half the cost of airplane alone because a CAP instructor needs a certain number of night PIC hours for his ATP course (and instruction counts).

A flying club with a lot of instrument pilots is also a good source. We all gotta keep current. Maybe the EAA if anyone still flies....

I need a ride from KBHM to KRYY to pick up my plane from Annual. If you leave now, you should be able to get here in a day or two.

MAKG1: Thanks for the tips. I've looked into CAP before but there is no local squadron. The nearest is about 60nm away by air. How often does one need to attend meetings to avoid being dishonorably discharged from CAP? Not really much for flying clubs or EAA activity that I can find, but if CAP can help me with this that's a feather in its hat (and I was already interested in CAP as a good reason to fly).

mulligan: I'd be glad to help out. You'll just need to get a commercial flight to somewhere in North Dakota, I'll pick you up and we can fly the 1100 nm from here to KRYY with me under the hood, split up for the 110 nm to KBHM with your plane, then go back under the hood the 1100 nm back to North Dakota and get you back on a commercial flight home. (I hope I don't end up so desperate for hours that I fly 20 solo round-trip just to get 1 hour under the hood!)

Oh, I don't mean you have to join CAP. You can if you want. But it's a place where a lot of pilots hang out.

As for getting kicked out, it takes months to years of not attending meetings with no contact -- basically, they'll clean the books if they think you don't exist anymore. No such thing as a discharge, honorable or otherwise. Annual dues make you "in good standing."

60 miles is a bit far. But I've been known to fly into meetings. Mainly for night currency.

I only know of one guy who got kicked out of CAP, and it was for cause. He had a habit of grabbing controls without warning, from the right seat. Did it to me on short final at Fresno during mission aircrew school. I'd never seen that instructor get mad before (they sit in the back seat for aircrew training). Holy ****, you do not want to mess with her when she's mad.

I do find the CAP flying rather interesting. Searches are at low altitude (usually 1000 AGL), even in mountains. You can be a target for air defense (done it twice now), when on a mission, you can sometimes operate within TFRs (also done that twice now -- one for fire, one for SAR). And there are several disaster relief missions such as damage assessment, water surveys, or even tsunami warnings (one of our aircraft has a set of loudspeakers that fit in the cargo door for that). And of course cadet orientation.

Going to be ready Friday afternoon I hope. Planning on picking it up and then will have to fly directly to Auburn. Big game this weekend.

I'd be happy to trade safety hours any time. Just shoot me a PM anytime and we can make it work. I only have 30 days of currency left so want to get up soon. Weather has been too nice to fly IMC so it's hard staying current with normal flying lately!!

When I did my instrument rating a number of years ago I found it nearly impossible to find someone willing to act as safety pilot. Living outside of a major metro area has its perks, but finding a large and active pilot population is generally not one of them.

Maybe it is time to take a couple of weeks off and do an accelerated instrument course and just get the rating/checkride over with?

I would do that, but my wife would kill me for burning my vacation time flying. If I haven't got it done by this time next year, I'll beg for some unpaid time off to get it done through an accelerated program, though. IFR is too fun and useful not to be able to file.

I'm always looking for a ride. I don't have my instrument rating yet but would be happy to play safety pilot. KFOD Fort Dodge, Iowa

Y'all playing Vandy right? Big game, why?

Because when we win out and beat BAMA in the Iron Bowl, we will go to Atlanta. And then to Tampa where we will beat Bama again. Id call you ****er but this site keeps ****ing blocking my ****ing words

I agree--Roll the Tide! How'd y'all choose an elephant to represent your school when the team's named after a bacteria in the ocean???

That all is irrelevant. No 1 is though!

Roll Tide!

Now back to our regularly scheduled program . . .

Mulligan, is your plane ready to go Friday afternoon? You still need a ride?
