Near Fatal Landing

why are they landing with wheels?

Their airline believes in wheels. Now see, eman is on to something here. Would we have to sweat cross wind landings if we weren't hung up on wheels? I mean if the plane touches down in a channel screw the wind direction right?
 
I didn't see a landing. I only saw a smack & go.

Looks like a pretty wild ride but wouldn't say "near fatal". Wild video for sure, but overall, I would say not exactly a well written article. I liked the "delivering a 60-degree crosswind component with which the crew attempted to contend".
 
Looking at the in plane video, one can see a lot of mountainous protuberances upwind of the runway. Given the wind strength, I bet there was a lot of rotors and mechanical turb going on. I think they did fine on the controls, but maybe didn't make the best decision to attempt the approach.
 
I don't like to think how bad it would have been were I flying in those conditions. I have enough trouble in calm winds. Were I trying to land a 60-knot crosswind you could remove the word "Near" from the title of this thing.
 
I've never seen the words "fatal" and "landing" used in the same sentence...unless another qualifier like "attempt" is in there somewhere...
 
Question for the airline guys. I know some of the planes I've been pax in have automatic spoilers, as soon as the mains touch, the spoilers pop up to dump lift. Is this indeed automatic or is it pilot controlled? In this instance the 37 banged the runway pretty hard, yet was off the runway again immediately. Obviously, automatic spoilers would have stopped the aircraft from going around, and the in the vid they didn't deploy. Just wondering how all this works.

As for the spoilers, from another source...

“Speed Brakes
Ground Operation
During landing, the auto speed brake system operates when these conditions
occur:
• SPEED BRAKE lever is in the ARMED position
• SPEED BRAKE ARMED light is illuminated
• radio altitude is less than 10 feet
• landing gear strut compresses on touchdown
Note: Compression of any landing gear strut enables the flight spoilers to deploy. Compression of the right main landing gear strut enables the ground spoilers to deploy.
• both thrust levers are retarded to IDLE
• main landing gear wheels spin up (more than 60 kts).”

The ground spoilers auto-stow if the thrust lever is pushed forward, of course.

They deploy once the plane has WOW (weight on wheels & others req'ts) so they are automatic in that sense, but I believe most jets can deploy them manually also.

Do they have journalists at Flying magazine? Legit question, I don't think of journalists as working at magazines.

The crosswind component is 17G34. Could probably land in that, but taxi might be a problem. I'll have either broken the gear off or scrubbed the tires clear through to the tube, but more likely just be off the runway. But that uses the words probably and might in describing the outcome and I don't like flights where the successful outcome is doubtful.

Like @denverpilot said, most all big airplanes work like the 737 above. Armed and WoW or Wheel spin-up, throttles (thrust levers) in idle, etc. I’m guessing that the reason these didn’t deploy was because the crew was already going around when they touched. Throttles were out of idle, so no spoiler deployment.

Ours is more insidious! Throttles at idle arms the system and then it activates if two out of three criteria are met. RA < 10', WOW, or Wheel Spin.

Well.... How my airline teaches landings will cause you to bounce or hit the Earth hard enough to leave a dent in the runway. They are scared that the IOE guys will stall the plane if they teach the correct way. However the way they teach caused the new guys to bounce and/or leave 1/2 the runway behind them.

How I was taught was leave the power at approach N1 until 10' and then slam it to idle. This was to satisfy the FAA because IOE guys were leaving the power in and bouncing the plane. So in mid-bounce, they'd freak out and slam the engines to idle. Guess what happened next? The ground spoilers deploy with the plane 5' in the air, and you become a very heavy ROCK.

The correct way is to slowly reduce the power at 50' and be idle around 30'. Then start slowly flaring to about 6* and it will land smoothly at the thousand footers.

So most landings at my place are either teeth jarring and/or high-speed WTF roll outs.

Pretty much the same on CRJs:

Thrust reversers < or = to idle, and 2 of 3; WOW >4 sec,
Wheel speed >16 Kts
RA<10 ft
