Name my house!

Sorry it's taken over a year to follow up, but we've selected a name over the off season and have rechristened our house...

"Crosswind Landing"

Anyone who's flown into Billy Mitchell airport (KHSE) will understand the name when winds are blowing out of the northwest. We didn't just change the name, we did a compete interior renovation too. If you're interested in seeing what we've done (or God forbid interested in booking the house for week this summer), PM me or checkout our Facebook page. We plan to rent it out by the week until Labor Day, and will consider additional weeks after then on a case by case basis. Pilot preferred, obviously, as this house is just a short walk from the airport. Mention POA for your pilot discount too.

Thanks for all of the help in coming up with a name. We got quite a chuckle out of a few of them.

That's a large place for us 4 seater pilots to fill. Gonna need me a Grand Caravan. :cool: Looks nice!
 
Congratulations on the house. We've been there and done that. We have some fond memories of vacations there when the kids were little, and flying in to Ocracoke. There also, "crosswind landing" would have been very appropriate. I love it.
 
The wife and I once owned a house I named "Too many Oaks" because the previous owner did not have the sense to cut down a few trees before installing the pool. I spent more time vacuuming acorns and leaves out of the damned thing than I did swimming in it.
 
What does a woman with one leg longer than the other call herself? (probably not a good name for a house but maybe)
 
I'll be at OBX (Outer Banks, North Carolina) the first week of July. Tried to convince my Darling to fly down there privately to KHSE, but we're flying United to RDU (Raleigh Durham) and then driving over instead. I walked the runway at KHSE last year.

You too? That's all I do, clean and treat the damn pool. Only time I get in is when I'm smoking, uh, cutting the grass and it's hot as hell out.

I'm one of those guys who does everything myself, or try to. Most of it isn't that difficult. Then I call the specialist when I can't, or **** it up badly. :rofl:

And that would be me if our vacation rental house wasn't 220nm away :)

People are paying good money to stay there in the summer so I can't take the chance of it it not being 100% ready to go every day.

Oh sure, perfectly understandable under those conditions. I'm mainly talking about my house and my kid's homes, and a few others.

I know I am late to the funeral but I cannot believe nobody suggested "***** Nest". Oh wait, you gotta spell it right: "Beach Nest". Unless you fly a Bo or Baron, then "Beech Nest"! :)

You might want to take the 'm.' out of your facebook link, that look all sorts of strange on a pc. phones should plug that in automagically
 
"Box made of sticks and drywall" is always my go-to for naming a house. Hahaha. Last one had bricks too but not this one. ;-)
 
To resurrect an old thread. Brad rents this place out, and I just finished a week here. Two families, 4 kids, 1 grandma. You can find the place on VRBO (property # 1064722) and it is as nice as the ad represents it. The place is a one minute walk from a truly spectacular beach. You can go to the beach several times a day or just take your homer bucket and fishing rod for an hour of 'drowning shrimp'. The place is fully equipped, even has a beach cart to haul your stuff over the dunes. Outside shower, fish cleaning table and a nice pool with a tiki-bar. Just bring 2 pairs of shorts, 2 t-shirts and swimming trunks, that's really all it takes. Now Frisco is not your boardwalk type ra-ra beach town. It's very much a family place and located in a stretch of the outer banks that lets say 'focusses on the beach and the outdoor lifestyle'. A few miles further down in Hatteras, there are multiple charter boat operations if you are into the off-shore fishing thing. I had to explain to my niece that the next starbucks is 60 miles up the road ;-) . Did I mention there is a beach ? If you are looking for a bar-crawl along the boardwalk, loud music or public intoxication, this is not the place for you. If you want to take your kids to the beach for a campfire at night, it is. I thought the island would be packed during the 4th of July week, but neither the traffic nor the lines at the grocery store were a problem.

The original idea was for me to fly down with the kids and to meet the 'terrestial' party down there. For a number of logistical reasons, that didn't work out and I had to drive my truck. I'll try to fly next time. You do need ground transportation if you fly in as everything is kind of spread out. The management company rents 4x4 trucks (to drive onto the beach), but I didn't inquire about the cost and whether they would be able to deliver one to the house or the airport.

As for flying in. Billy Mitchell airport (KHSE) is a national park service facility operated by NC DOT. The park service has some ideas on how the place is to be run, and you probably want to stick to those rules if you want to be invited back. Consider bringing your own tiedown ropes as the ones provided look a bit sunburnt. There is a parking restriction for aircraft, from what I could find it is 'no more than 14 days per month'. This week, there was plenty of parking, all I could see was a Caravan that comes and goes and a few singles.

A particularly frugal suggestion for any VRBO / AirBnB type property. Do a little Google-Fu to see if the owner offers rental without the associated fee from the upper level marketer.

You nailed it regarding Frisco. There aren't many places east of the Mississippi and south of Maine that are 1.5 hours from the nearest McDonalds. While there are plenty of good restaurants, ice cream shops, a fudge place and mini golf, it's certainly a very different vibe from beaches up north. While you were drowning shrimp on Sunday, I took the family over to Ocean City NJ for the afternoon. We got in a round of mini golf, scarfed down some boardwalk pizza, and shared a bag of popcorn. It's great for people watching, but the actual beach doesn't hold a candle to Hatteras.

Occasionally folks who've never been to the Outer Banks will ask about shopping, activities for teens, nightlife, etc. down our way. I let them know if that's what they're looking for, they're probably more interested in Nags Head and points north. For us, the ocean, the sound, the laid back atmosphere, is what attracts us to Hatteras Island. My idea of nightlife is building a bonfire on the beach or watching the stars from the top deck in an amazingly clear, dark sky. I've found that kids really get into that too.

We went to the OBX last summer with family, and we were up in Corolla, at the north end, which sadly lacks any airports you can park overnight at. With home only about 4 hours away by Mooney, we decided to take the scenic route and visit friends in Charleston, SC "on the way", so we also made a stop at Billy Mitchell and walked down to a nearby sandwich shop to grab lunch. The two ends of the OBX could hardly be more different! But, there are things to enjoy about both, and given the traffic issues at the north end, if I were to own a place it'd be... Well, probably just about where @Brad Z's place is. :thumbsup:
