Naco has their digital products (e.g. WACs) available for download as digital products in the TIF format. (http://aeronav.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=aeronav/applications/VFR/chartlist_wac) I'd like to load a few of these on my iPad2 for an upcoming trip to the Bahamas. None of the major iPad aviation applications support WACs natively, and don't quite cover the area in which we plan to be traveling. ForeFlight's new World coverage is "nice", but doesn't quite cut it for actually flying there. Staniel Cay (MYES), for example is just outside of their coverage area, and Cat Island (MYCB) isn't in there at all. The same is true for WingX Pro.

Be that as it may, I'm trying to figure out how to load a legible copy of the WAC on my iPad2 in TIFF or any other format. I tried PowerReader HD, and it was totally illegible. I tried GoodReader, and it was much better, but the text was still fuzzy, especially in complex airspace.

Has anyone else done something similar and have some tips or suggestions?

Note they are supposed to be GeoTiffs, woth geo referencing tags added to the TIFF file. I suggest you look uo geotiff as a serch term in the apple app store and see what comes up.

If you or someone you know has Adobe Photoshop, it converts from TIF to PDF without any problems. Then you can load it using any of the iPad readers.

Any Mac can "print" to PDF. Open TIF, hit Print, go to bottom left and print to file as PDF.

Probably similar free tools for PC too.

Wont the PDFs lose the calibration in the geoTIFFs?

I believe so, unless they're location-aware PDFs, which I don't think is what you'd get out of this. I'm working with Avenza to see why their PDF Maps application isn't loading these properly.

There are two ways to get geo information in to PDF though the one with the most traction in the industry is TerraGo's GeoPDF extension. It will definitely take some specialized software (either TerraGo's or someone licensed by them like RemoteView) to convert from GeoTIFF to GeoPDF.

Now this is customer service!
Hi Grant:
The issue with these maps is that they have an unusually formatted WKT string in their referencing data.
We have to update our code to handle it and already have a fix that just needs a little testing.
In the meantime, as we said, we managed to get them to work in the app via a quick reformat to geospatial PDF and are now in the process actually of getting all of them into our in-app map store. There is one map there already and we have created a new category called aeronautical to accommodate them. You should find them all in the app shortly.
Thank you and regards

I've attempted to load some World Aeronautical Charts from the FAA into PDF Maps, but get the message below. *The source files are available free at aeronav.FAA.gov/index.asp?XML=aeronav/applications/VFR/chartist_wac. *my understanding was that PDF Maps could read GeoTIFF files. *Are these in some way malformed, or of a variant that PDF Maps doesn't understand? *Specifically, I tried all four TIF files in CH-25 and CJ-26.
