I have a 16gB iphone 4 off contract but currently serviced by AT&T and want to switch to ST using AT&T towers.

When I use ST's phone compatibility wizard, it says the phone is compatible with their programs.
Looking at their sim card purchase site, it says it only works on unlocked phones.
http://iphoneimei.info/ says this phone (IMEI 012648002902122) is locked.
Chatting with them is pointless, they have no clue if it will work.

How to tell if it will or will not work?
If it's locked what is the best way to unlock it, or does that come with unforeseen hazards?

Thanks

AT&T might give you the unlock code if you completed your term with them.

AT&T is REQUIRED to unlock your phone if you just ask them.

Tell them that you're going to Europe.

If they are required to unlock your phone, why do you have to go to France?

It looks to me like when I unlock this phone, there will be no consequences and no change in service... the only issue might be if I was wrong about being off contract. Penalty if still in a contract.

ATT has pretty much always handed over the unlock codes if you were in good standing with them and you told them you wanted to use a overseas sim in it when traveling.

Funny. They absolutely and positively refused to do so for me, as my phone (one of ten we pay AT&T for the privilege do using) was still in the contract period.

I will remember this as my phone contracts expire.

You have to call the International desk.
