[NA] NYC steakhouse suggestion

Taking my wife to NYC week of 12/17 for a Broadway show and anniversary/birthday/get-away-from-kids trip. Looking for dinner one night and the show the next night. She has requested a steakhouse for the 'good' meal. We're staying near W 54th & 8th, but willing to put some time in to get somewhere 'good'.

The peanut gallery did well for suggestions on Philly cheesesteaks a couple months ago, so returning with a new venue in mind. Whatcha got for suggestions for a solid not-a-chain kind of steakhouse in NYC?
 
I can vouch for Keens; I had the mutton chop and it was excellent. As a pipe smoker, the history of the place and the thousands of clay pipes hanging from the ceiling were a plus for me. Never been to Peter Luger but I have heard great things about it, and want to go there the next time I'm in NY.
 
Keens steakhouse, west 36th just off of 6th ave is my go to for that area.
As per the news Nov 22, 2024, it was sold to Landry's, the seafood (and other stuff) chain for $30 million. No idea what the impact will be.
 
The only steakhouse I ate at in that area is Del Frisco’s at 48th and 6th Aven, about two blocks from Radio City Music Hall.

Peter Luger’s is in Brooklyn and is cash only; I wasn’t comfortable walking around with that much cash on me in NYC.
 
I haven't been in some time, but heard word of mouth that Peter Luger has declined. By the same token, I've also heard that former Peter Lugers' staff have struck out on their own, who may be the source of such rumors.

When I worked in midtown years ago, firm clients were regularly dined at Del Frisco's Steakhouse on 6th & 48th, opposite Rock Ctr. If I was going to commit that kind of coin from my own pocket to a Manhattan location steakhouse, that would be it.
 
Actually Texas Roadhouse has pretty good steaks. Seems to me that the more money I pay for steaks, the more disappointed I am. I've eaten at Bern's here in Tampa, Charlies, Ruth Crists, and Peter Lugers and aside from one steak I ate at Charlies, they've all been Meah.
 
Keens is OK, mostly trades on its name these days (and not on quality).

Luger's isn't worth the hassle of going to brooklyn. Wolfgang's (https://wolfgangssteakhouse.net/) was started by a former Peter Luger's guy.

My fave in NYC remains Striphouse, and the original location near the village (12th street). https://www.striphouse.com/store-locator/

Quality Meats is also pretty solid.

The 'Landry's' chain has some very fine dining restaurants in their portfolio. I think ownership by Fertitta's group will have no adverse effects on the quality of dining. Del Frisco's and Morton's are among their holdings as well as the de novo Mastro's.

You can also go to Sparks...which is pretty good and not very pricey.... just make sure your name is not Paul Castellano and look both ways when you walk out... :p :cool:

As it turns out - and I should have thought of this - the week before Christmas is prime tourist season in NYC.... duh! As such, reservations are slim right now. I grabbed an 8:15 for Delmonico's for now - no penalty for cancelling if something better comes along - and have alerts set up for a few of the other places suggested here in case a table comes open. Still open to suggestions - if nothing else, I'll have a repository of info for future trips.

Edit: ...and grabbed a spot at Del Frisco's Double Eagle for 7pm. It's closer and a bit better timing, but will wait to read more reviews here and elsewhere before deciding which one to cancel.

The Grill, one half of the former Four Seasons. Expensive and worth it IMO. 99 east 52 street.
 
We went to Benjamin Steakhouse, recommended by our hotel concierge but we both didn’t like it. Happy to add the ones you mentioned above to give it a try. Can’t wait till our next trip back out there.
 
Did I mention kids eat free at Texas Roadhouse on tuesdays?

Start at Perini Ranch. I usually won’t do a steakhouse unless it’s OPM, but anytime I’m near Buffalo Gap, I’ll foot the bill there. Shoot, I don’t even need a reason; we’ve decided spur of the moment to go up there and it’s a 3-hr drive for us.

Don't worry, the concierge got his kickback all the same.

I've never had a concierge or hotel employee ever give me a decent recommendation for anything. Ever. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but they're usually either incompetent or just recommend tourist traps.

Haven't been in years, but add Smith and Wollensky (3rd avenue). Was excellent last time I was there.

Next time you get over to the Winter Haven / Lake Wales area, give Manny's a try.

The last time I ate at Charlie's in Orlando was way back in 1989. I ended up marrying the lady I took there, so I figure that steak dinner cost me several hundred thousand dollars. So far. And still counting.

Texas Roadhouse hasn't been the same since they got rid of the peanuts.

But it's a chain, it's intolerably noisy, and if I'm spending that much money, I don't want to endure the same cacophony I can get in Denver. I'm not sure but I may have eaten at Gallagher's last summer when I was there. Definitely want to try Keens next trip in January.

Note: Since I don't remember which steakhouse last August, just a note...I was there solo, and the busboy was the most attentive. The waiter never came back to check on the meal, never came back to ask about dessert, I had to ask the busboy to find the check. The restaurant was not busy (a bit early for the regular dinner crowd). Of course the waiter was busy with a couple who were drinking like fish, so he knew that was going to be a much bigger tip. I handed the busboy cash (a goodly tip), left the minimum on the check, and mentioned to the manager as I walked out that the service was less than sterling.

The steak, on the other hand, was fantastic!

It's surely about the cost. An ACH debit transaction with PIN verification should cost pennies, $0.25-$0.50. If the card is run through the credit card interchange network, Visa/MC/AXP will skim 2.5-3.5% from the merchant. Assuming they want to accept payment at the table, that would mean using the portable readers that the server hands to you, which are very common abroad. The absence of restaurant tipping in most foreign countries smooths the process by omitting those steps. Peter Luger also leaned into their house credit account; having one was a status symbol akin to paying elsewhere with a black card.
 
Everyone has their own preferences, but here is a suggestion based on mine. I only order ribeye, absolutely no butter on top, and charred surface. And, I enjoy the classy old school style atmosphere.

Benjamin’s on 41st is my number one favorite place for steak, appetizers, atmosphere, and service. Caesar salad and thick cut bacon are must. The best bartender in the city is behind the bar. I always take a back booth - a classy setting.

Empire Steakhouse, especially the East (though all three locations are consistent and very good) location is close second for the same reason. One advantage here is Empire has items other than steak selections on their menu for someone who is not in the mood for a steak. The grilled octopus is excellent.

Wolfgang’s and Smith & Wollenski are very good, too. But, not as classy as the two mentioned above. Wolfgang’s by The NY Times building has a nice modern setting but not my liking for a steakhouse.

Sparks and Delmonico’s (the oldest restaurant in Manhattan) did not impress me. Not bad, but nothing special…rather boring. Sparks gave me that regular diner feel with cheap tables and furniture covered by a white linen.

Del Frisco’s, Wolfgang’s near The NY Times location, Striphouse, Benjamin Prime, they all messed up the steak (Del Frisco’s and Ben Prime screwed up twice). The most disappointing steak was at the Striphouse - poor meat flavor, and I thought it was steamed meat not grilled.

As far as the steak goes, they all pretty much use good quality meat. It all depends on how well and consistently the grill chefs manage the temperature of the steak.

Again, NO butter (don’t camouflage the flavor or the quality steak, unless it is old).

And, what’s wrong with a “chain”? Texas Roadhouse does a good job for casual dining at better than reasonable price. For what they serve for prices, I never had a bad meal at Panda Express, Burger King, etc.

What's wrong with the chain? I can eat at Texas Roadhouse at home, any time I want (and often do) But when I'm traveling, I want an excellent local restaurant.
 
Pete’s Tavern in Gramercy Park. Moma’s Tapas next door is also HIGHLY recommended.

I don't understand your hesitation...Its not like you would be carrying a lot of cash around for very long in Manhattan. ;)

You don’t buy food, you just rent it for approximately 24 hours. Grab a pizza, and convert your savings into AMUs to spend towards that new panel in your plane.

I did that. And, my Mx is renting a lot of steaks, I bet :p
 
Neglecting some of the other chain places like Del Frisco, Capital Grill, or Mortons (which are OK), my favorite (another small chain) is The Palm. I've eaten in these in various cities including NY. In fact, this is the place I requested my father take me to celebrate my acceptance into college.

Keens is certainly the best of the local places.

While not a "steakhouse" per se, our favorite near the theatre place is Sardi's. The steak tartar is a fave.
