Ok, this gluten free / celiac thing can't be real or at least not nearly as common as it appears to be.

Home school mom has her son over here swimming but warned about giving him snacks because he has a "Leaky gut" I have a leaky gut too. Every morning, it leaks right into the toilet.

Anyway, I look up leaky gut and the internet really thinks this "syndrome" is a made up.

I have a ton of pizza left over from a "party" last night. I put party in quotes because it was just my wife's friends and co workers drinking wine and crying because they all married down.

So I text mom and say "can bubble boy have dominoes?" Now here's the deal, That is all I said.
I didn't want to sound like a cheap ass and ask "can bubble boy have some reheated pizza from last night that we didn't finish?"

So of course she thinks we are ordering it now.

Her response "He can only have gluten free. Let me know the cost for his portion and I will cover it"

So I start internetting this gluten thing and by the way here is a funny azz article about it:
http://www.science20.com/science_20/celiac_trendy_disease_rich_white_people-93422

From the article:
"Are you white and a little resentful that black people get their own cool disease, sickle cell anemia? There is good news for you. Celiac disease is all the latest rage and you can be any color at all and claim it.

How do you know if you are gluten intolerant? Elaborate assays? DNA? At least a blood sample? Nope, you just have to give up wheat and say you feel better and you are allowed to claim you have it."

So anyway, I didn't want to respond that we were just having left overs and have an awkward situation where I feed my kids and not hers and send him home just skin and bone.

I just said no worries and the gluten free half cheese / half pepperoni pizza from Dominoes is on it's way.

A note from Dominoes website says they don't recommend ordering gluten free since it is made right along with gluten laden pizza.

So is this gluten thing even re..... Whoops... Gotta run, my gut is leaking....

Unfortunately, celiac is not fake or made up. But, on the other hand there are always bandwagoners looking to join a new fad. If her kid truly is gluten intolerant, she shouldnt shift the burden onto you to provide a gluten free meal, especially at a party. Chances are she just blames whatever malady he has on gluten. The side-benefit to all these fad hoppers is that it makes for a lot more options for those truly afflicted.

I think this situation is somewhat band wagon.
everything comes with special instructions be it food, activities, schedule, etc.

Never just "Sure" Always "Thank you for inviting him but he needs this special creme because his skin is made out of penguin feathers" or something.
This is the first year he is not home schooled. He is in my son's school but she is taking him out next year because she "Doesn't like not being around him all day"

I think mom may have attachment issues. Just guessing.

There are parents, then there are what I like to call "child enthusiasts". This individual sounds like the latter...

99% bandwagon or chic.
****es off the 1% who truly do suffer from it as it minimized their bonafide condition.
OTOH, this 1% is overjoyed with the market response, and the vastly greater choice in such food products which might otherwise never have happened!

Y'know how much the glucocortisone pill prescribed for "irritable bowel syndrome" costs? Nearly $1,700 a month retail. It's one damn expensive fad if it's not real.

The "gluten free" movement is a marketing ploy. For some people, gluten is a problem. But most have no adverse reactions to gluten. Gluten intolerance is easily checked with a standard blood test. If you aren't intolerant, staying away from gluten does nothing for you.

I'm "lactose intolerant" and I just made a boboli pizza with an entire thing of shredded mutz on it. I'll just fart like there's no tomorrow for 3 days straight. wait, if there's no tomorrow, eh nevermind. let me see if I can dig up a skit online about asking people if they eat gluten free, then they ask them wtf is gluten and nobody knows.

Celiac is vanishingly rare, though I believe we have a syndromic individual who participates here. I have the suspicious that there are folks who suffer gastric upsets that "decide" it must be gluten. Given that a gluten free diet takes some doing, the changes made probably cover up whatever was really wrong with them.

Then again, if someone can solve their gastrointestinal difficulties with such a diet, good for them.

Over awareness has resulted in oversensitivity. Part fad, part reality and everyone lies somewhere in between.

Gluten sensitivity is on a sliding scale for most everyone. Some people have full tolerance, some are deathly allergic. Most fall somewhere in between. True celiac disease IS a real thing, but few actually have that and many that claim to are are self diagnosed.

I am in no way am "Gluten Free" but I fall in the middle. When I eat breads and high gluten foods I feel bloated and my digestive system is VERY unhappy. I have been much happier and healthier since I made a conscious choice to reduce gluten based foods, but it is a private choice I make without preaching or being on a crusade. I will still have a sandwich or a piece of pizza here and there but I will pay the price...think of it as a bad hangover after a hard night of drinking...it was still worth it!

Is there Gluten sensitivities out there?...yup, very common. Are there too many people overreacting thinking they are all mighty in their lifestyle choices?...absolutely!

When I bought a can of diced green chilis and noticed it said "Gluten Free" on the label, that was my breaking point. Are some folks so effing stupid they question whether a can of veggies might contain gluten? o_O

Now I find gluten-free beer on the shelves. Puh-leeze!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not really recognized as a specific dx. It is a catchy phrase from the WWII era to describe a whole host of poo troubles. Everything from peeing out your bung hole to being completely hung up.

just ask the kid what he wants.....and give it to him. :D

btw....when I was a kid we called that getting the runs.

I just bought him a $15 hermetically sealed pizza, cooked in a clean room and delivered by 2 gentlemen in radiation suites with white gloves, wearing air tanks.
They handed me the sealed box with a built in hepa filter and an ionic field that only allows positive particles to pass.

Kid is gonna live :)

No ****. ( Pun intended)

But that's how this drug is advertised. "Relief of irritable bowel syndrome, talk to your Doctor" Though they do briefly mention Crohn's as well as Celiac briefly in there somewhere.

The masses are mostly insane. Remember how ADD and ADHD were all the rage about a decade after spanking a naughty child was outlawed? Now the psych authorities have decided that the whole world is autistic. Just like Celiac/Crohn's/gluten intolerance are real things that have become the cool things to have, autism is the new cause of kids acting like little brats. Autism is real, but not nearly as common as society thinks.

Hey, it's all good as long as somebody makes a dollar on it, right?
(Now, what do I do with that sarcasm emotithingy...)

Is that real or a joke? Its hard to tell for sure these days.

I have food induced IBS. :D AKA I suffer for eating foods that should make you suffer. If I decide to eat insanely hot chicken wings, I'll suffer for that action the next day.

I do have a friend that really has a gluten issue. It sucks for her as her food options are extremely limited. She's happy about the increasing options for food.

Is that real or a joke? Its hard to tell for sure these days.

My roommate told me that, during his high school years the football coach relabeled a drink machine to include Diet Water. The coach did this to teach the students not to be an uneducated lemming. After a month they discovered that the Diet Water outsold Regular Water almost 3 to 1.

Another April Fool's that plays on the uneducated is the "Dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide" joke. http://www.dhmo.org/

Funny thing is I fall in this category. I don't have full blown Celiac but I've had it since childhood and it runs in the family. If I eat one sandwich I'm okay. If I eat another sandwich, I get a rash, I swell up a little bit, and I'm irritable as as all hell and it lasts about two days. If my mom gets bread crumbs on her food or eats something with gluten in it without realizing (there is more than just gluten, btw that triggers Celiac) she goes in to anaphylactic shock and it's a trip to the ER for a shot of epinephrine before she suffocates. I don't have it that bad but some relatives are that bad.

FIFY!

I think the gluten free craze it right up there with 'fibromyalgia'
.....and chronic fatigue syndrome,
and the dreaded black mold illness.

I wonder if she would be a good candidate for an Epipen?

It's a pretty rare occurrence. Those relatives that have it only eat at home, or get food from the store vs fast food restaurants when traveling.

Black mold isn't something I'd mess with. Living near the gulf coast I can attest it's some nasty ****.

There is mold all around us, many different types of mold, but there is only one black mold you need to learn how to recognize and stop it or vacate yourself from it.

Or it's a bunch of **** and I've bought it hook line and sinker.

The sad part is, if you ever were given that diagnosis and declare it on your 8500-8, the FAA considers you to have it and it IS an SI, even if it was IBS-C. :(

Re: gluten intolerance, as recently as 3 years ago my GI specialist considered "non-celiac gluten intolerance" a real entity, despite a dearth of good science supporting it. Last I read, the dx has been discredited by more recent studies, so in all likelihood it is a "bandwagon" disease.

My wife's sister has it along with many other things. She keeps a strict diet and takes medicine for it every day. I thought she was faking for some time. Turns out she isnt.
