Anytime you 'friend' someone, they get your phone number on FB.
The admonishment below says "friend or not".
Maybe not too surprising, but its certainly not well advertised.
I just checked it out. Only half my friends actually posted theirs. Not sure if mine is out there or not. No biggy, I can ignore unknown callers.

"Go to the top right of the screen, go to ACCOUNT,go to EDIT FRIENDS, left side click CONTACTS. you will see all your phone numbers (FB friends or not) are published...."

I'm pretty sure that's been there for a while now. I got a few friends numbers off FaceBook last year....mine's been there for a few years, I know that.

if you sign up for mobile facebook so it goes to your smartphone then it gets your number and it can publish it to your friends.

I put mine on facebook a long time ago so people could get a hold of me. I forgot all about it untill someone I added from high school called me. I asked were they got the number and said facebook. With that said it did what I wanted and made it easy for someone to get ahold of me.

so once again facebook only does what you tell it to

Mine's out there, and have had a few old friends that I haven't seen or heard from in years call. Nice !

And worse, it can autodial your phone if you hit the wrong place on the screen.

Some of us actually like the feature.... There is no longer any semblance of anonymity in the country, or even much in the world. Most paces you are even more tightly known and watched. There is no longer a need to pretend.

Alright, then: PM me my name.

NO they don't. The numbers listed there are ONLY those that your friends have already designated for public posting

That contact page, also know as a phonebook contacts page, aggregates the numbers in one place. No privacy settings were changed.

It's annoying watching these BS chainposts on FB by sheeple.

There's 700 or so folks on my fb friends lists. There's maybe 150 numbers on that contact page.

That is pretty much exactly what I said. About 1/3 of mine have listed their phone numbers and I now have access to them when I did not before.
'Be careful who you friend'; same mantra we have always said, this time it involves revealing something that FB does not advertise well.

I generally don't friend people i wouldn't mind meeting IRL so the point is actually quiet moot. Only reason my number isn't on there is ambiguity of whether my number is accessibly by any apps me or my friends may have.

The thing is - it was always there (at least for the last year, if not longer), but before, you had to view their profile to see the number. Now you just have to look at a list.

This is nothing new, just a more convenient way to get access to information that the user specifically allowed.

I didn't read all responses before posting.

No biggie, the thing is - I bet if you polled the average FB user, I bet less than 10% realize they have put their ph # out there.
And...not all of us are keen to get a phone call from Jack (the Ripper) from our highschool days.

I bet you are right and the percentage is way lower.

If you do not want to here from you old friend Jack just do not add him as a friend.

So delete your phone number or leave just do not blame facebook for it being there.

I wish it were that simple.
My understanding of the internet is that once you post personal details including contact info such as your mobile phone number, others (in this case, facebook 'friends') may take that info and post it elsewhere. Take a look at your friend list; my estimation is that 90% of fb users 'friend' rather indiscriminately. Meaning you will get some friends of friends and acquaintances....rather than true and trustworthy friends with access to your phone number. One step beyond your circle of 'friends of friends' can be entirely untrustworthy people in my experience.

You might say this is unlikely to happen and I would agree - my point is that facebook is not actively warning users about this - to which I hear agreement.

Or you might say that it is not much different than telling someone or writing down your phone number for them and I would disagree based upon how the internet has a propensity to increase access to such things exponentially.

So, the thread is not about an alarming threat, the world was never said to be ending. But it is accurate that few folks realize what fb is doing with their phone numbers and that a risk exists. Each can decide how much risk exists.

One has to know that your Facebook exposes personal information however you tell it. If you're configured to show a lot of information to your friends (most are) you should be selective about who your friends are.

I ignore about 50% of the friend requests I get and go through my friends list a few times a year to remove people.
