NA: diy roomba base cyclone separator

Idle hands are the engineer's workshop...

I didn't like the single-use bags. This is a drop-in reusable replacement, fits perfectly.

32oz ziploc twist n loc
1.5" aluminum tube (maybe silicone tube would have been better)
8oz ziploc twist n loc
3" sponge filter
1 tomato paste can

It's the outlet; see updated pics.
Air flows in through the side, spirals down, up through the can and filter, and out the hole in the lid.

Someone got us a robo-vac for Christmas. I don’t think we would have gotten one on our own. Now that we use it, I am starting to look at the optional base with the vac-vac. This invention looks good.
 
Vacuums the vacuum? Isn’t that like some sort of self blow
 
I tried to use this the other day and an interesting thing happened. A clot of dog fur must have made it past the gap and ended up wedged against the sponge filter. The resulting suction broke all of the hot glue joints. Impressive, most impressive. A FOD screen at the bottom of the can is needed.
 
The first iteration is seldom perfect.

Said in jest, but I absolutely agree. I've looked at that stupid, expensive bag in the Roomba base many times and wondered why there isn't an option for a reusable container (the reason, of course, is that Roomba makes bank on those bags). A properly constructed insert like this, made of good quality materials, is something I'd buy in a heartbeat. It would sell like hotcakes to most Roomba base owners, I suspect.

As a physician, I primarily smile benevolently at grateful patients as I take the credit for the efforts of engineers and research scientists who actually made the device or developed the treatment I'm prescribing. Thus, I don't have the skills and am far too lazy to fashion something like this. Make it so!
 
How did I miss this the first time around!? Definitely going to have to tinker with this idea!
