So sad. Someone shot multiple people and bombed an Aurora, CO movie theatre tonight during the midnight opening of Dark Knight. Reports of 10-14 dead, 30 injured.

There are nut jobs everywhere.

Very sad that most if not all of the victims are going to be young people.

Thoughts and prayers to the victim's families.

The perp has been taken alive and is talking to police.

One of the victims was 3 months old.

I have been told that the recording archives of the dispatch channel are horrific in the first 30 minutes.

My .45's never too far away.

I wonder why some people feel like life is so cheap? If you're so bad off, why kill others and not yourself (which I still don't understand)? It makes no sense to me why someone would want to hurt people that are innocent.

Humanity has some growing up to do.

really sad, and tragic. Thoughts are with the families.

If you want to express your pro-gun sentiments, please take the argument to the Spin Zone and leave this thread for those who want to express concern for the victims.

  • I live about 5 sm away from the mall. The theaters are across the parking lot and across an access road.
  • I haven't been to those theaters in years and for good reason. If I need to go to Sears (one of 4 anchors) I park by Sears and go directly in the Sears doors, not thru the mall.
  • The mall itself is a known hangout, and has had serioius gang problems in the past. Either the new owners of the mall or the old ones changed the name (i.e. Blackwater) to try and dispel some of the bad press.
  • There's always a substantial presence at the mall and at the theaters. For starters, the police dept HQ is across the street!
  • The newsreport says he came in the exit door, hence the cops probably didn't notice him until too late.
My additional comments are over in the Spin Zone.

A truly horrible tragedy. What is it about Colorado, the thin air? First Columbine, now this. Always seemed like such a nice place to me, if a bit full of cumulogranite.

I believe it is the job of the management council, and not you, to determine what is and is not appropriate for discussion.

Unconfirmed reprort that the 3 month old has been released from the hospital. Small miracles.

How about leaving both pro- and anti- gun sentiments out?

Focus on the victims and the criminal, and not the tool, maybe?

I rarely venture over to that side of town, and Dark Knight's not my genre of movie ...

1 report I read said the perp was wearing a riot helmet and bulletproof vest.

So sad. Reading the news and other reports of these young children injured some under 10 years old. I guess i do not understand why parents let their children watch and attend such violent movies.

Prayers to all the victims.

Sad news. We're visiting Breckenridge and were in Denver a couple of days ago. It's relly a shame that there are people so badly screwed up, and even more of a shame that those around them do and say nothing. I suspect there are people who know this deranged idiot who are not surprised by what he did... if there are, they should be deeply ashamed.

Pro or anti gun sentiments are aboput people's rights, not about the "tool".

This was tragic, and yes may have been stopped by a citizen legally carrying a gun. There pro-2A sentiment.

I only learned about this when I turned on my computer this morning. "Dark Knight" is not any movie I would be viewing, especially at midnight.

I agree about leaving pro and anti-gun sentiments out of this discussion. There is already a thread for that in the SZ.

What's worse is that some folks probably egged him on. Perhaps unknowingly (they were joking, he wasn't) but contributed just the same.

This act is unthinkable for nearly all of us so it's difficult to imagine why someone would do such a thing. However we can and should be prepared to defend ourselves from such lunacy. It is our duty.

OK. let's leave the rights out of this thread too, ok? Since we all know that it's a politically charged topic?

Michael Bloomberg has already weighed in from NYC while there are still reports of a panicking father driving the parking lot with photos of his 27 year old son he knew was at the movie, asking if anyone has seen him.

Might I respectfully say, mind your own city's f---ing problems, you prick.

Local news just pre-emptied the President for the Aurora Fire PIO briefing in front of the suspect's apartment which he's reporting is booby trapped.

The politicos need to back off.

OK, as a member of the MC, I'll echo what Peggy said. And what Tim suggested.

I believe Mari (who is also on the MC) has similarly weighed in.

Gun control debate and politics related to this belong in the Spin Zone, not here.

Such a sad tragedy- I have been at that theatre many times. :( Thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and I hope this nutjob gets what he deserves...

The President's moment of silence was held at the exact same time the dispatchers were doing a roll call for all Police units in the field.

There's still a lot of people still working here. There's still people in surgery.

Hospitals are reporting that the number of affected people is still rising, due to people going home and then feeling effects of the gas.

This is still a tactical crime scene right now. They're just now finishing rotating out all of the swing and graveyard shift Public Safety personnel who were up all night.

The bomb squad is still working at the apartment. There's still lives on the line.

Ridiculous media and politicians. Sickening actually. These political press conferences from two time zones later are really inappropriate.

too bad that Colorado has all these gun laws - can you imagine if a citizen was packing and simply blew his a$$ away the moment he displayed his weapon and pointed it at someone - all 'Gun Free Zones' do is make this kind of insanity possible . . .

Sure thing Tim. I will keep any "rights" discussions in the other SZ thread.

I agree completely, but Peggy's restriction only related to statements opposing her viewpoint, not statements agreeing with her viewpoint.

Suspect was a graduate student at University of Colorado at Denver in neuroscience. Dropped out last month. Per CBS 4 here in Denver.

My main concern will be the knee jerk reactions by those in power, plus the fact we have no method of sorting out these people who do these horrendous acts.

It's sad, but a fact of life, they are out there.

I'm not sure she stated her viewpoint on gun control, but really, the viewpoint is immaterial. Pro-gun and/or pro-gun-control arguments both belong in Spin Zone.

I'd be equally supportive of someone who suggested that pro-gun-control arguments belong in Spin Zone.

Let's keep this thread on the topic of the tragedy & the victims.

I first heard about this incident as I drove from the theatre at 3:15 A.M., having just picked up my son and friend who went to see this film. Sobering stuff.

Based upon the initial reports about the attacker, it sure looks like he's a nut job, no need to debate the weapon of choice; a committed killer will find a weapon, whether it be factory-finished or home-brewed.

Something snapped. Happens. Guy in my Rotary club tried to stab his wife, then stabbed himself. To death. This was last week. Stabbed himself to death. Nibble on that one a while...

Initial reports when they talked to his mom, said that she said something like that she knew it wasn't a a mistake, it probably was him, and she needed to catch a plane to Denver. Sounds like he'd been messed up for a while...

...Might I respectfully say, mind your own city's f---ing problems, you p----...

...Ridiculous media and politicians. Sickening actually. These political press conferences from two time zones later are really inappropriate.

Why do you keep posting Spin Zone material ouside the Spin Zone?
