Touchdown! Greaser!
It is no longer a Manhole Cover. It's a Maintenance Hole now. Got it?
I say they're a bunch of Ass Holes.
I say they're a bunch of Ass Holes.
... before the lock. Or lockette. Oh, wait... never mind.
Huh?
I thought this was a manhole cover???
I'm with SkyDog. It is rather silly, but if the voters of the town are OK with it, who cares? It is no longer a Manhole Cover. It's a Maintenance Hole now. Got it?

Berkeley is not necessarily representative of the rest of California.Because California has nothing better to work on.
Because stupid is stupid no matter how many people vote for it.I'm with SkyDog. It is rather silly, but if the voters of the town are OK with it, who cares?
I feel like Southern California is not representative of Northern California.Berkeley is not necessarily representative of the rest of California.
I feel like Southern California is not representative of Northern California.
I do, ideas/beliefs have consequences.I'm with SkyDog. It is rather silly, but if the voters of the town are OK with it, who cares?
It is no longer a Manhole Cover. It's a Maintenance Hole now. Got it?
I say they're a bunch of Ass Holes.
I still don't care.Because stupid is stupid no matter how many people vote for it.
That's a stupid goal! How about we let the people who open the fackin things for a living call them whatever they want and the people who walk past them everyday on the way to their worthless degree can STFU!
I don't really care about the matter. What I care about is people complaining about something stupid and people not telling them they're stupid. That's all I want to happen, I want people to know and understand they're stupid.
Actually, using the term "Personnel Access Cover" has been around since the mid 80's.
On a related note... why are manhole covers round?
Sure, but the consequences of this one are trivial.I do, ideas/beliefs have consequences.
Triangular won’t either. So they won’t drop through no matter how it is oriented
So they won’t drop through no matter how it is oriented
Because tubular structures are strong, like Grumman spars. On a related note... why are manhole covers round?
No, triangles can’t. Simple geometry.This. I know of one other shape that will not drop through. It's the rounded triangular shape that the Wankel engine "piston" uses.
I think a regular triangular shape can fall through.
Are there any others?
Only an equilateral triangle would benefit from what you're talking about, and even it could fall through the frame if it's rotated appropriately as it falls.Triangular won’t either.
Triangular won’t either.
I have yet to see an auger capable of drilling a triangular access tunnel.Triangular won’t either.
The more I think about it, the more I realize he's right... if we include a tether. But then we open the door to all kinds of shapes, including random shapes made with crayon. All triangles, including isosceles?
I disagree. Language is important, and it represents truth. Redefining language can reshape a culture. They know that. Why else would they be doing it?Sure, but the consequences of this one are trivial.
And rotate it point-out, a leg against the midpoint of a leg of the frame, and all of a sudden the triangle has a shorter dimension. No tether. A equilateral triangle lid can’t fall through. Try it.
The corners can never be further apart than they are when the lid is properly fit. The point could be down, but the lid can’t fall through.
Nope. And rotate it point-out, a leg against the midpoint of a leg of the frame, and all of a sudden the triangle has a shorter dimension.
