I have a wmv file I would like to extract the audio and convert to a mp3, any suggestions?

I use Audacity to do that. Set Audacity to record the "Stereo Mix" or whatever it's called on your computer. Start Audacity recording then play the video. When the vid is done, stop Audacity's recording and edit out the silence at the beginning and end. Save as MP3.
...and ZINGO, you're ready for lunch!

P.S. Audacity is freeware...GOOD freeware. Google it.

VLC; when I ask to save the file as an mp3, it saves it as an (unreadable) .ps file.

Audacity; when I play back the saved file, the audio is so distorted it is no where near the original.

I can send the file to anyone interested in trying.
Thanks.
Will try to upload the wmv here

Don't know what you sent, but what I got was a black video screen and 18 seconds of something that sounded like an owl in the night. Weird.

Dave,
I've done that before on video files. Send me a copy and I'll take a whack at it.

boboggs at good ol' aol.

That's it; the file is too big because of the (unnecessary) video attached to it - it's the audio of that critter I want...in an mp3 would be best. I want to strip out and discard the video, leaving an audio file.

Now everybody gets to guess what manner of critter that sound is.

Good idea. I will provide mine, and a comparison later.

For reference, the critter confronts us during our predawn hike about once a week in a nearby national park. It is usually in the rocks, but has been on the flat open areas, typically about 100-300' away - but has been as close as 20'! He makes this sound when we stop walking, or when we shine a flashlight on it. The eyes have a good tapetum - they reflect the light very well and the eyes are set close together (predator vs prey). He moves pretty quickly and is fairly low to the ground ie 18"(small mammal, not an aviator). Because it is dark, we have never had a good look at him. SW Texas mountains.

thanks, (that got it down from 4 to 3mb).
Care to share how you did?
I apparently have no way to convert .wav to .mp3 which would get it down some more.

As to how, I have a video package that makes Windows Movie Maker look like Notepad. But in addition to the video production functions, it has a plethora of capture, input and output functions (output audio only, being just one of them). I originally purchased it to read in the DVDs of my nephew's home movies and break them up into meaningful .mpg files.

The package is Video Studio from Corel. The current version (Pro X3) doesn't work right, they improved it until it broke. But I still have v11 and use it extensively.

It is nice to record TV and then edit out the commercials before watching the program. Takes about 10 minutes to do a two hour program, exclusive of the burn time.

Thanks guys.
The wav and the mp3 above...when I click on them, they each offer (only) the option of saving as ppt - seems strange. However when saved, they work fine as an audio file and open in wmv.

No guesses on the critter?
