I decided to buy and finish a kit for a replica Spiller & Burr .36 cal black powder revolver (a cap & ball) with the intent of selling it after I was done. PM me if interested
The brass frame was extremely rough (it just came from the mold) and the steel was blued, which I took of only in the exterior parts and left inside the barrel and cylinder chambers for rust protection. After weeks of grinding, 5 stages of sanding, and a polishing stage, the metal work was done. The black fillings were kind of engrained in my fingers for a while. The walnut grips were sanded down to size and then molded, and then I applied a clear polyurethane finish.
Here's the result (last 2 pics show how the gun was originally):
