I decided to buy and finish a kit for a replica Spiller & Burr .36 cal black powder revolver (a cap & ball) with the intent of selling it after I was done. PM me if interested ;)

The brass frame was extremely rough (it just came from the mold) and the steel was blued, which I took of only in the exterior parts and left inside the barrel and cylinder chambers for rust protection. After weeks of grinding, 5 stages of sanding, and a polishing stage, the metal work was done. The black fillings were kind of engrained in my fingers for a while. The walnut grips were sanded down to size and then molded, and then I applied a clear polyurethane finish.

Here's the result (last 2 pics show how the gun was originally):

Very nice work. Looks great. I'd suggest not shooting it a lot, however. Brass frames tend to shoot loose after a while. Bad impact on accuracy. But that's reallly good looking finish work.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Kevin, you have a PM.

About the brass frame, as long as loads are kept around 15 grains of black powder, the frame will never stretch, and many Spiller owners can verify. I've also seen what happens when the revolver is abused with too great a load, and the damage isn't frame-streching, it's indentation of the recoil shiled by the cylinder.

Nice job! I need to get a steel framed BP revolver to shoot. I've always wanted a Colt 1851 replica.

That looks great!!

here are some of my projects.. I fold my own receivers...

Cool! Nice receivers. I had two AK's built up with parts kits (before the barrel ban) using U.S. made receivers. A Polish Tantal and a Yugo.

Are your kits Yugos?

Nice. I'd like to have one someday--but don't know much of anything about building one (either AR-15 or AK)
