My pet degu has been very sick this past week. Sunday night, I thought she was going to die. :( She had no upper body strength and she wouldn't eat, her tail was infected (her sister bit it a while back) and she would lay in my hand limp.

I took her to the exotic animal clinic on Monday morning. They said she had a serious infection in her tail and that it moved in to her bloodstream. So they sent us home with some antibiotics, pain killers, and special food (ground up, really fine timothy hay with nutrients). Since Monday I have been on a strict schedule with feeding her every 8 hours. (Yes, I come home from work and feed her) and give her the antibiotic every 12 hours and the pain meds every 24 hours.

Tonight when I came home just in time to give her, her meds I decided to let her walk around on the table for a bit while I prepared everything. Since she didn't eat all her lunch I heated that up and stuck it in a cup of warm water to heat in the syringe. When I looked over at her, she was licking the side of the cup from where the water had dibbled down the side. Then, she stood up and stuck her face in the water and drank out of the cup. :D She kept doing it, so I took a 12 second video.

I am so glad she is feeling better. I thought Sunday night I was going to have a burial for her the next day.

Her name is Winnadegu and her sisters name is Wheredmydegu. The day I picked them up from my friend I was sitting at the drive thru and looked at the clock...."2:30 already. WHERED MY DAY GO!!!!" I looked at one and said..."Ok...thats your name...Wheredmydegu." Then not even 2 mins later a Winnabego drove by and I said "And thats your name. Winnadegu."

Degus make awesome pets. They live btwn 5 - 10 years and have awesome personalities. :D

Thank you. Both are really sweet girls. Around 1:30 - 3:00 am...before I go to bed...they reach up for me to say goodnight to them. It's really amazing.

An old GF of mine had a pair of rats. It was amazing how smart and fun they were. Very curious, they'd explore and you could just see the gears turning. I liked them.

For a minute I thought you were talking about Tegus, small carnivorous South American lizards. I hope your little one pulls through.

Your little one would make a good lunch for a Tegu. Nasty, temperamental things, actually.

Stop using the vet. Rodents know what a snake is, and instinctively fear them. The stress of the serpent's locality didn't help your little one any.

or -- at least tell the vet.

That was a thoughtless act.

Well the snake was in a cage and curled up in a ball, so she had NO idea what was going on.

Then there was a full grown monkey that was the size of my palm who had come out about the same time I did.

Rodents have a sense of smell 10,000 fold better then us. They can see a snake, and believe me they don't know whether the snake is asleep or not. They don't like to be around them, the whole predator/prey thing. Hope he's feeling better.

BROOK! THERE'S A MOUSE ON YOUR KITCHEN COUNTER!

:D

Just don't insult the rabbit!
