Everything Offends Me
We were discussing this at work today, and I got a bunch of opinions on words that really irritate other people with the vagueness and buzz-wordiness.

What's yours? I'll start: "Solution."

Seriously, calling something a "Print Solution" sounds downright retarded. It can be used in almost any context:

Here's our new Network Solution.
Here's our new Software Solution.
Here's our new Telephony Solution.

Never seen it used as a buzz word, but I'd be fine if it was.

I might start using that.

low hanging fruit
paradigm shift

There's a company nearby that has radio advertisements that say "We specialize in Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies that will boost your RoI" along with a number of other buzzwords to make people go "Hey wow they must know what they're talking about, I'll go with them!"

"Call within the next ___ minutes..." in TV advertisements.

Do they really know exactly what time their ads air on all possible networks? Or is it just an attempt to make you think the offer will disappear? I'm leaning to the latter.

Customer Care - more like, "customer, we don't care".

Thinking Outside the Box - 'yer box is too damn small! How's that for thinkin' outside the box?

"High-Def" or "HD". Everything's gotta be "HD" these days. :frown2:

Pretty soon they'll be marketing "HD" pillows. :rolleyes:
 
green and eco

As in: We went with the green eco-certified boilers to heat our 20,000 square foot driveway snowmelt system! (That sits infront of the 10,000 square foot (4th) house built with "green building techniques.)
 
How about when exponentially is used to compare two items. My credit card bill is exponentially larger than last year's.

Deliverable - What's our deliverable? How about a punch in the face?

Actionable - Is that actionable? I dunno, is that a word you jerkoff?

Reach out (double shudder) - I figured I should reach out to him. I figure I should reach out and strangle you!

Mox nix (I don't mind the real German phrase,spelled correctly; I hate the corrupted B-Speak version)

My wife uses these terms sometimes when she talks about work. When she does, I interrupt her, and say "Don't ever use that stupid phrase ever again." It seems to work. Yet, they keep inventing new stupid phrases. I can't keep up. :mad2:

Reach out and deliverable are the ones I hear the most. The former makes me nutty, the latter is in 90% of the contracts I review and I mainly see it as a Defined Term.

I have yet to hear anyone say Macht's nichts, either correctly or not.

"We need it by Close of Business"

I saw a game called Board Room Bingo. What you do is make a bunch of bingo cards with buzz words in the boxes instead of numbers. Then you pass one out to everyone attending the meeting. The object of the game is to check off a box when you hear a buzz word that is on your card. The first one to reach bingo then stands up and shouts Bulls**t.

I had to look this one up, and the way it's used is technically correct, but...

metric

As in, "what metric are you using to determine the success of your test?"

Unfortunately every middle manager in my company has latched onto that word like stink on an ape.

You know I've been thinking about High Def, HD recently. I have the old Rat Patrol TV show on DVD and in the beginning in big letters it says "IN COLOR!" and the announcer says it as well, like its something special. And it was back in 1966/67.

When we look back, we are going to view HD in the same dated way as "In Color".
 
And the weather channels favorite....
