Flying to a towered field today and i call 10 miles out inbound touch and go.
He had me call 4 mi out.

Then he says 18 clear to land.

So "land" means land regardless of what my initial call was.
I was just about to rotate when he told me I could turn off at Alpha four.

I told him my intention was touch and go. and he let me know I had been cleared to land not for the option I think he was a bit agitated because I messed up his spacing.

So anyway minor mistake but lesson learned.

After the clearance to land, I would have informed him that I was requesting a T&G.

The controller can be agitated all they want. He has no benefit, minus a crossing runway, to clear you to land over a T&G. They forgot about your initial request. That's all that was.

T&Gs seem to be good for spacing, in the sense that they get you off the runway faster. However, there might be some traffic inbound coming at you....

Cleared to land means cleared to land, and whenever ATC says something incorrect, it's a good idea to clarify. Just yesterday, ATC turned the G in my tail number to a 6, and there were a ton of similar call signs around.

After giving you landing clearance ,you could ask if your cleared for the option. He may not have processed your initial request ,if he's busy.

D'oh.

I can remember lots of times I've been cleared for the option when I requested landing. But I don't remember any times being cleared for something more restrictive than I requested. There was one time I was coming back from someplace, wanting to do at least one touch and go, but ending up in a hornet's nest. Tower was trying to switch rwys from 36 to 18, there was some kind of event going on, about 3 or 4 inbound to land, and another three or four at 18 and 36 waiting to take off. One guy requested closed traffic for touch and goes. Tower just said, "unable". That was all the hint I needed to not bother asking.

Why ask for the option when he wants a touch & go? The 'option' is less likely to be approved due to spacing issues.

Something similar once happened to me at a NON-towered airport. I was announcing all my positions in the pattern and on short final added at the end that I was doing a full stop. The other guy in the pattern "thanks for letting us know" in a sarcastic voice then chewed me out for not saying it was a full stop earlier. I suppose he was right behind me and not allowing much of a separation. He was a bit of a dick even if he had a point.

If he wants to tailgate, he can also have the go around..... :rolleyes2:

any chance when u called up 4nm out you mentioned full stop? I dunno. enough about you, let's talk about eman1200.

coming back from GMU to JQF (Greenville, SC to Concord, NC) today I was told 'stay clear of bravo'. clearly they didn't know who I was, but anyways, I skirted slightly north so I could get under the 3600' floor of the bravo (instead of the 1800' if I stayed direct). the guy calls me up and asks if I'm changing destination, I said 'no, your initial instruction was to stay clear of bravo'. he said 'oops, you are cleared into the bravo, direct to JQF'. one of the other controllers must have tapped him on the shoulder and said 'psst, do you know who that is!?!?! give him whatever bravo he wants!' so, e'rbody makes mistakes I reckon.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Today was a bit messy anyway.
Clearly the first good weather day in awhile.

I have traffic just everywhere on the avidyne. I was getting warning after warning.
The controller was slammed.

I have never done TnG in the Cirrus and it is not worth the effort when the pattern is full of Flight School 150s.

Left Pattern, Right pattern, extend your downwind, go around on the right side, make a 360 for spacing. It got to where I was taking off full flaps and 1/2 throttle.

I need to hurry up and get my putt putt plane

I did my PPL training at EQY (Monroe) and the CLT controllers were always pretty patient with me as I butchered the mic.

Bryan, it is obvious that you you do not understand that we GA folk are just annoying mosquitoes. Get the heck out of the way so that the Citation on a 10 mile final does not have to deviate from his stabilized approach.

Just can't bring yourself to fly a pattern at the lowly speed of 90 kts, huh? ;)

I am sure Concord had ALOT of departing traffic today since the NASCAR all star race was last night...

Had to have been a zoo...:hairraise:

I thought the same thing. Other than the parking lot being jammed, the airport was mostly quiet. There was an Allegiant flight loading up when I got there (pic included) and as soon as I started my run-up I saw them taxiing behind me (got it done just in time to not make them wait lol). The tower said "44V, how long will your run-up take?" I said I'm done, I'm ready to go lol. but yeah, I thought it was gonna be a zoo, I must have departed in-between rushes.

Cleared to land means cleared to land, and whenever ATC says something incorrect, it's a good idea to clarify.

Good advice here. I find this is always the best course, even at the risk of irking the controller.

I was once inbound for full stop and given vectors by tower to maintain spacing, etc - each time the runway mentioned was 35. After all traffic was clear and I finally got clearance to land, he slipped up and said 'cleared to land runway 17'. I called back said, "tower, please confirm cleared to land runway THREE GIVE". He corrected himself immediately.

I always clarify if I am not sure or ATC gives me a different instruction then what I asked for.

Or just do what I did as a freshly minted PPL:

Was working with a CFI post ticket and got a bit scattered...

Tower: "Cessna XYZ, make right traffic runway 26, #1 cleared to land"
Me: "Right traffic 26, cleared for the option, XYZ"
Tower: "Alrighty..cleared for the option then I guess!"

Why ask...DEMAND!

oops.

Bryan, I heard your normal landing were more like "touch and go's" anyhow. ?!?! :)

You could have just replied; 'cirrus xyz, going around' and did what you wanted. Unless you were off the runway, you own it, and can do anything you want. If the tower doesn't like it, well, that's why Tums are made.

lots of funny stuff and good reminders...

I flew for some airwork and a landing today. Caught one heck of a gust on landing (wind was 4 kts gusting to 14). Initial touch was left main with stall warning blaring for about 2 seconds. Ballooned on the gust for a few seconds and about 4 feet. Not pretty. Got the "exit when you can" call from tower...hanging head in shame...gonna sell plane and take up knitting...

I get to log 3 for every full-stop landing. :)

I did a zoom climb this morning.
Well, Vx solo w/ 1/2 tanks but still looks cool.

sh*******************t
I trued out at 180 about a minute after the video ended.

Edit: I am not really one to make cocky remarks like that.
I really appreciate that I get to do this. I am fortunate beyond belief.

P.S.
But I did M Effer!

I get along with the local tower guys/gals here...

A few months back they screwed up a radio call , Upon landing I said " Tower, I have a number for you to call ,are you ready to copy...:rofl::lol::lol:..

We went out for some food and beverages after they got off work.....

Great tower crew here...:yes::yes::) ..

Genius!
I Am going to use that :)

"6PC copies cleared to land - requesting the option."

Agree that he just forgot, and it's usually no big deal.

However, I just landed this afternoon in a situation where it could have mattered, actually; I was cleared to land on 21, and a King Air was cleared to land ahead of me on 3. (The wind favored 21 but was only about 5 kt; I assume 3 was more convenient for them for some reason.)

He was down and off the runway in plenty of time to not be in my way... but if he'd done a touch and go instead I'd have had to abort my approach.

Of course, this situation is, I think, fairly rare.

The partner in the king air is building a cabin on the west side of the island, he has to fly in all the building materials. So yesterday he's got enough kerosene on board to get there and back assuming he can find a some thermals along the way, and the rest of the weight is bags of cement. Lots of cement. Our paperwork allows us to use the old military gross weight. And I think he went back and added a few bags after I told him I'd fly it for him since he's having a bad sinus day. So I get to treetop height and sit there for awhile to accelerate. That is, accelerate in the same way that an oldsmobile diesel station wagon accelerates. As i pass low over a cessna sitting at the end for departure they come on the radio complaining that they don't appreciate showboating like zoom climbs. I asked them, do you see me either zooming or climbing? I'd settle for either one.

Just don't try for 4. I heard on the 4th, you have to replace the prop and get an engine overhaul.

What is Vx in your model? That thing climbs like a piper cub with a moose in the back. j/k.. Next time, take off no flaps and stay in ground effect until the end of the runway, then zooooooooooooooooooooooooooom away. Post that video next time! That will fix those non believers! ;)

Controller probably forgot that you originally asked for T&G. But as others have already said, you have to comply with the clearance. If you don't like it or just want something different, ask in advance. Happens all the time.
