Military Pilots flying GA

I was a Tweet IP in the late 90s. At one point when the AF was transitioning from between IFS ideas there was a period where studs came with no IFS of any sort. Most of these Lts had 0 hours. We couldn't see any appreciable difference between them and the IFS graduates.

My son did his (Navy/Marine) version of IFS in a C-172, with a contractor in Northern Virginia. I wanna say sometime 2007, plus or minus. . .

If I recall right, they sent 'em out on a night cross-country after solo. I guess if they came back, they passed.

I don't think USAF owns the CAP airplanes, actually - I think CAP has a corporate set-up similar to the Red Cross. USAF provides oversight, etc., and can task them, of course. I should know (but don't), as I flew with them for 14 years. The bean counting wasn't of interest to me.

I know CAP HQ decided when to sell off the older inventory, etc.

I'm pretty sure they do. I'll check! BRB! :D

Well, couldn't find a statement of who actually owns them, except one that says CAP owns them. They are an auxiliary to the USAF. (Title 10)

Looking up a few tail numbers they say Civil Air Patrol, Maxwell AFB, AL and in parenthesis (Government)

Checked with a buddy still involved - CAP apparently owns them as a corporate entity. Not USAF owned. But not likely CAP would do something rad with them without USAF input.

The other folks in my class with no flight experience said IFS was rough. For us with flight experience(when I went through, everyone had to go, even if you were a CFI) it was a cakewalk. There are quite a few programs around the country. Two that I have found are Accessible Aviation in MS and Premier Flight Academy in Cleveland. Only problem is the DA-20s at IFS have the instruments on the right side and the student flies from the right seat(so the throttle can be on the left like in the T-6 and fighters). Yeah it's right seat vs. left seat but as long as someone can get to where they can safely land the plane before IFS, they will conquer one of the biggest reasons people washed out when I was there.

They are flying Cirrus now.
