I think it's a Maule.

Crazy story, but plausible.

Nope, looks like a Stinson tail (and even has the bow-and-arrow logo peaking out there).

I think what you're actually seeing is the upper left tail bracing wire of the Maule and not the tip of the archer's bow of the Stinson logo. The aircraft shown in the background of the photo in Post #1 is a Maule, and the wheel covers are on to hide the unexplained scuff marks on the tire of its left main landing gear.

Don’t know if same incident Jack refers to, but Max Treacott mentions a mid-air encounter where one airplane left skid makes on the wing of another.

Bet that was not the only place there were skid marks.

Tire mark? The other pilot probably just thought it was turbulence. Both missed death by inches that day.
