Perhaps the reason that oil derrick is on the coast just below Santa Barbara (given the age of that map) is because the very first offshore oil well was in Carpenteria (S of S Barb). Chumash indians used naturally occuring asphaltum in their canoe building. Asphaltum seeps still are visible in SB county, in SLO county to the north, Ventura County to the south and as far inland as Kern County.
