Memorial Day

All gave some. Some gave all. I had one K9 handler in my unit get hit with a PBIED. I was not in country when he got hit, but the shock is the same.

Many people think Memorial Day is Cliche' for a free day off. Very few truly understand the blood spilled that is based upon. Go watch all of Restrepo you get a taste if you have never served. That's about as real deal as it gets.

And thank a vet. Because of them, you are not speaking German or Japaneese right now. That's legit.

When I wonder where we're headed sometimes, an encounter with a USMC recruiter comes to mind, telling me how his small office was swarmed right after 9/11.

Yeah, just kids, naive, no clue, really. But willing. Willing.

Trying to remember all the National cemeteries I've visited.

I used to live in Ft Leavenworth and drove past, or through, that cemetery a couple times a week. Markers there go back to the 1800s.

Stopped at the American cemetery when I was in Luxembourg on a business trip. Gen Patton and many of his guys are there. Interesting info I got from the guy at the information center: Casualty ratios were about 2:1 during the Battle of the Bulge. The American cemetery has 5,000 graves, the German cemetery a couple miles away has 10,000.

I visited Arlington a few years ago.

I know I am forgetting some.

Sadly enough I saw a news article where the Veterans Memorial was defaced with graphitte. Sorry I don't have a link to post. Makes me so sad that the low life's in this country appreciate the veterans sacrifice so little to do something like this.

Thanks Vet's for your service to our country!!!

Of all the guys I knew and served with who died in Vietnam, this is the one that still hurts the most.

Bruce and I were best friends. We grew up on the same street, went all through school together, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts. We built and raced dragsters together.

BRUCE EDWARD REED is honored on Panel 31W, Row 96 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Date of Birth: 4/23/1948
Date of Casualty: 2/28/1969
Home of Record: PEEKSKILL
County of Record: WESTCHESTER COUNTY
State: NY
Branch of Service: ARMY
Rank: CPL
Panel/Row:31W, 96
Casualty Province: HUA NGHIA

I don't have any family or close friends who had died in service but my father and 4 of his 5 sons who lived to be old enough to serve did so. We were all lucky to raise our right hands and offer our lives to the country but they did not extract that final service from us. I am grateful for that and proud that our family did all we could to protect this country. My father was born in Germany and we were all born in the US. This is our home and we will do what is needed to protect it.

Always watch the old war movies on Memorial Day. Midway is playing on AMC now.

RIP to those who gave all.

I was just visiting my grandfather. He is a veteran and a big war movie buff.
We went to his house today and he was watching the same thing.

A young pilot friend of mine spent 4 years in a forward combat unit in the Marine Corp. Served in Iraq during the bad stuff, has a Purple Heart (I haven't known him long and don't feel comfy asking probing questions, probably never will. I'm quite certain he lost buddies over there). He gave a speech at the local Memorial Day ceremony, in full formal Marine dress blues and a chest-full of medals. I don't think I'll ever look at him quite the same again. Although he's not a tall guy, he's about 10-feet tall to me.

From the Nam,can never forget all gave some, some gave all. Still to this day it continues.
