I'm still on the hunt for a plane and was considering a Maule taildragger. I called Avemco for a quote and it was almost $6k. I have 100 tail wheel, 600 total, and my IFR. Any ideas on what I could expect for around $100k hull value and other companies I should try?

Find a good broker…they’ll reach out to the likely underwriters, some of which I don’t think an owner can deal with directly, and can advocate for you once you establish a relationship.

Maules can be difficult. In the 19 years I owned mine, there were several years where the only quote my broker could get was the underwriter that was currently insuring me.
 
My factory maule was about 4.5% of hull with Old Republic
My experimental maule is about 6% of hull with US Specialty

I was zero hours tailwheel when starting with the factory Maule. I am well over a thousand hours experience today.

The rates you have that don't seem to far off from Avemco. Other taildraggers (Citabrias, PA12) we're about $2k for similar hull.

Avemco was always the most expensive quote I got back in the day. The quote you got is basically what I'm paying for a one of a kind experimental.

Maules tend to have a premium on insurance.

As someone else suggested, have a broker shop you around.
 
Any suggestions for brokers? I figured Avemco is worst case cost wise, so if I can stomach that I'll hopefully end up a little better.
 
Teri at Northwest got me insurance for my Parrakeet when nobody else other than Avemco would touch it. Avemco quoted a higher price, of course.

Whoa whoa whoa.... Experimental Maule? Experimental exhibition? do tell. I've always loved the Maule but my next plane will be experimental. Maybe should take it to PM so we don't thread drift.

Nope. Experimental amateur built. Was built during the great recession by a guy that used to work at the factory. So it's got most of the benefits of a factory build and most of the benefits of experimental.

I don't think it's a terribly repeatable goal based on the fact that there are only a handful of experimental maules in the world.

I really wish they would offer some of the older models in an experimental kit. I get the vibe a lot of the new ones are working airplanes. EAB would give them some more volume on a market that wouldn't interfere with the current certified.

Can't hurt to call them. One of the very, very few advantages of being in a hobby/industry with such low volumes is that you can get the top dog on the phone, shoot your shot and see if they bite.

Otherwise, bear hawk is an experimental maule for all practical purposes.
 
Two taildragger Maules were registered in my county this year; both sustain damage when they put a wing in the grass. Might have something to do with the high insurance cost.:rolleyes:
I went tri-gear Maule with insurance being the deciding the factor and I fly out of my front yard. You might find some more information on http://www.maulepilots.org/
