I need to get serious.
Last year I called Matt and had him come over to look at my trees, which were pretty shaggy. If anyone doesn't know, that is what Matt does for a living. I know, most of us think that he flies gliders for a living, but that is just his hobby. He actually has a real job. He took a look at them and said that they were pretty bad, and that if I didn't do something and a good storm came along I would end up with some limbs on my house. Or something like that anyway. He said that he could trim them up so that wouldn't happen. So he went to work on them and when he got done they looked good.

OK, so now this weekend we were up North at Clear Lake camping. It was beautiful weather where we were. We were out bicycling and having a ball, but Sunday morning my daughter called up all excited. Big storm in Ames. Trees down everywhere. Neighbor next door has a huge maple on the ground. Neighbor across the street has four trees uprooted, and one on his roof. Neighbor down the street has one on the ground and most of the limbs tore off another. No power anywhere. The neighborhood looks like a battle zone. Trees split in half right down the middle. I asked her how we were, and she said that we had one limb down but it didn't cause any other damage.

We came back that afternoon, and when we turned on our street things looked pretty bad. As I approached my place anticipating anything, there was nothing. I looked around. All my trees were fine. There were leaves and twigs all over the place, but no limbs on the ground. Finally I saw one two inch limb hanging up in one of the trees. Nothing more. My neighbor saw me looking up in the tree and came over. He asked me how bad I got hit. I showed him the limb, and he asked me if that was it. I told him that was it. He couldn't believe it. He walked around my yard trying to find something that I might have missed. It took me ten minutes with a hand saw to get it down. Good job Matt. :cheerswine:

yea i stopped in ames on sunday and matt was pretty busy running all over town cleaning up the mess.

Good on Matt and good on you too for noting the need for and carrying out preventive measures, not waiting for a minor disaster like all your crying neighbors. (now we all get to pay upped premiums because of their inaction)

Here is another one of the "Spider Matt" in his native environment :)

What rolls down stairs alone or in pairs? Rolls over your neighbor's dog? It's great for a snack, it fits on your back, it's LOG LOG LOG!

i think that is Matt's version of "whistle while you work"

Thanks a lot Rollie. You're too nice. I'm pretty sure I didn't tell you your trees were a mess and needed a lot of fixing up. I mainly agreed with you that they were a bit shaggy and you could use some head room. I did a little preventative pruning on that one over the house and that might have helped. Probably a lot of luck.

Just last week I climbed about 10 trees for a client about a mile north of you. 2 of those trees fell completely over in the storm!
