Man Airdrops Sandwich For Friend

Looks like fun, except for one small problem.

Over other than congested areas – An altitude of 500 feet above the surface except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In that case, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

It was an emergency.

""Tiny plane"? I was expecting a drone, not a 172.

Good point. If I found that my sandwich had Ranch dressing, the first thing that would pop in my mind is throwing it out, fast.

It was thoughtful of the pilot to throw it within 500' of the guy so that he could more easily dispose of it, instead of just littering.

He let go of the controls before he was 500 feet away from the fella on the ground. He was not operating the aircraft during the short time he passed that person.

Dude, this is ND. 95% is sparsely populated

Right. We agree on that.

And the "sparsely populated" bit is precisely why the part of 91.119 that I bolded is pertinent to this case.

Except when the sandwich has Ranch.

Party pooper!!!

The fact that Subway reposted it is probably going to be the trigger for the Friendly Aviation Administration looking into it.

I'm thinking the same thing...they will go after him in a heartbeat

Was the guy that paramotored to McDonald's rule compliant?

The beer cannot be a twist off cap and the opener has to be dropped separately.

Condiments can be in the package for extra points but they must be in frangible containers.

Cheers

I think we should start a new contest.
You need to drop an entire meal, including beer, and it has to be edible and the beer not explode in your face.
Let's think of additional rules.

1. TV for college football?
2. Kegs?
3. Shot glasses
4. Scantly clad female (s) waitress
5. Port-Of-Johns (not required though, just uh whip it out)
6. Snacks, lots of snacks.

Looked like 500' to me but I am notoriously bad with measurements. ;)

ETA: It would have been more impressive had he dropped it a bit at a time and built the sandwich on the "fly".

I love this, but yeah, this is too easy as stated. Beer can go in a plastic container, and cold cuts / bread would be easy to make survivable.

If you're going to go to the trouble of air dropping supples, I'd like to think you care enough to drop -quality-. Like... a deep dish pizza. :)

I thought they were "porta" potties or johns, as in portable? If they're a whole nautical facility, then, well, we're gonna need a bigger plane!

Think that's a company's name around here. May have misspelled it, maybe it's Port-A-John.

Dunno.. I don't know the rules for those things. But we were talking about the 500' rule and I was curious.

500' foot rule is waived if taking off or landing, I believe.

(don't quote me on this, I don't have time to look it up)

Fair enough, so the Subway guy could say he was executing a go-around to the grassy field when the sandwich left the plane. But he had definitely ascertained there was no danger to people or property on the ground.

No rules broken, fly on!
