Lost Registration

So a pilot has lost the registration certificate for the aircraft. Airplane is not airworthy because of the missing paperwork.

47.49 says:

(a) If a Certificate of Aircraft Registration is lost, stolen, or mutilated, the holder of the Certificate of Aircraft Registration may apply to the FAA Aircraft Registry for a duplicate certificate, accompanying his application with the fee required by §47.17.
(b) If the holder has applied and has paid the fee for a duplicate Certificate of Aircraft Registration and needs to operate his aircraft before receiving it, he may request a temporary certificate. The FAA Aircraft Registry issues a temporary certificate, by a collect telegram, to be carried in the aircraft. This temporary certificate is valid until he receives the duplicate Certicate of Aircraft Registration.

Does the pilot use the regular aircraft registions form (8050-1) to apply for the replacement? If that is the case the thing about the telegram temporary doesnt make sense as the pink copy of 8050-1 is a temporary registration certificate. So maybe the pilot just sends a letter to the FAA with 5 bucks (47.17) and says oops I lost my registration. If that is the case then how does he get the temporary registration while the "check is in the mail"?

Too bad that having the info printed off from the FAA website showing that FAA records obviously show the airplane as registered is not good enough (or is it?)

Call OK City. They will send a fax that will serve as the temp replacement while the check is in the mail.

My experience as well. I lost a registration once and called OKC. They faxed me a temp and I had a new certificate in a couple of days. This is one case where OKC seems to understand the sense of urgency.

Yep, OKC is real good about taking care of these. Last time I discovered a missing registration was right before a discontinued check ride...

Since there are no more telegrams, you could have trouble complying with the letter of the law here. As noted above, phone call/fax is the way to get your temporary and get back in the air.

Actually FAX is OK.

Even back when they used a telegram they were using a facsimile telegraph. Crikes I remember receiving stuff on that thing...it actually burned into the paper.
