Lear 23s

I really am not looking at a jet. Like the rest of us, I enjoy window shopping Controller. I know I can't afford to operate them, even if they were free.

It's fun to dream. Tomorrow I start on another dog run that will be a 2 day trip with 15 or so on the hobbs. It would be nice to do it in 1 day and half the time, but just not in the budget.

The 310 is a great airplane, and I have this one really well optimized, with some more ideas on the way. We did talk about going bigger with the girls, but I don't like any of the piston options and didn't want to restart the project/restoration process. OEI performance is worse (often much worse) and speed isn't any better for way higher fuel burn and more complexity. You end up needing to burn Jet A for more speed. Of course then you get even more fuel and expensive parts.

Like I said, my question was academic. Henning nailed the aspects for me, though. Since I like turning wrenches and lots of old Lears in junkyards, I could probably keep MX costs relatively low. But the 260 gph on a 23/24/25 is a bit much. Even the 170 or so for a 35 isn't exactly a Prius.

Thanks for the info. :)

What you need to do is build your own algae reactors and growing your own fuel. ;)

but the gen pop still wants 'those little planes!' to stop flying around their house. Notwithstanding that they bought a house right under the departure path of a long existing airport.

Never said it didn't go both ways. It does.

But when I see the guy circling around geyser basin at 500' agl for about 15 minutes in his 182 last year waiting for old faithful to pop and listening to all the comments from the peanut gallery. One can surely understand how the "normal person" doesn't like us. Hell, I hated that SOB for what he was doing.

And this is but one example. I can give many more.

You forgot "and get the plane for free" ;)

I have the compressor section of a bizjet engine at work. This sounds like the start to another version of "One Piece at a Time". :D

You could get a jet to get the flights done faster... Or... You could get one of these and fly them all at once and not even have to land!

I guarantee you can get an old Lear with time left donated to you.

The real secret in underpriced jets is the "Jew Canoe", the IAI Westwind's. They have great range, reasonable fuel economy (less than any Lear), built as tanks, standup cabin, still supported, none of the noise restrictions and can be had for $200K. Only problem is you need 2 pilots. Had these been SP, they would have had 10 times the value. If you ask me, they look sexy as hell as well with that fat twin front wheel, mid wing and low slung fuselage. Like a low rider, pimped out.
I have never heard a Westwind get called sexy. Ever.

Not many people are brave enough to bring them an old jet anymore. I haven't seen a tiny Lear in years that wasn't contract maintenance. Can't remember the last time I even saw a Westwind.

Falcon 20 have really strange engines and you never know what you'll find doing cpcp inspections or pulling wing planks.

Edit: I forgot that many F20 have been converted to TFE731.
I see quite a few Westwinds still. The other day we had 3 on the ramp at one time, it was a little odd. The same day we had a Lear 23 in. It's pretty rare to see anything older than a 35.

Yep, 501(c)3.

Ok, that's what I thought. Boats of similar status (White Elephant) get donated pretty frequently to get out of the costs and forward liability, should be able to get an old Lear the same way. They aren't selling for cash, you can give them a tax deduction.

Ha, jew canoe. That's all I've called them since first hearing the term.

I see a few in and out of PDK every now and then.
