Landings in wind

I did a BFR once with an ex-Navy guy in a 172 out of RYY. Very unlike any other instructor I've ever flown with. All the others were clearly taught being groomed for the airlines....all about smooth. No airsickness here......
This guy was like
Cessna 123, turn left heading 090...Bam, yoke hard left, instant 30 degree bank angle, hard back to center to maintain the bank....reaching the new heading, Bang.... yoke hard right, instant wings level...boom, yoke neutral.
He was very jerky...but extremely precise....no flying 089 degrees...it was 090.

Honestly I wish I'd have had a chance to fly with him more.
 
I teach my students to use whichever rudder will get the nose lined up with the runway, then opposite side / direction of aileron. Just enough of each to keep tracking down the runway straight. Put in or take away corresponding amounts of each if you drift to either side of the centerline until the drifting stops.
