LAHSO wording changes - Final released

What was "clarifying" about that?
Maybe I just don't understand government speak well enough.

Lol. It helps to have read the original but I didn’t want to wish that on my worst enemies.

Basically can just read the new “final” to see what controllers have to do and offer and the exact phraseology theyll be using as mostly a heads up for pilots, I guess.

Whether we pilots can remember what they’re supposed to say and catch them if they don’t, is a whole different hill to climb...

I just subscribe to these updates trying to stay ahead of what us dumb CFIs should be trying to teach ... which is a mountain of them every month and pretty much an impossible task... but sometimes if I’ve read it, hearing the wroBy thing over the radio at least sets off the sixth sense that something is very wrong way in the back of the brain...
 
My most embarrassing aviation foible was a botched LAHS at PHNL.

Tower cleared me to LAHS of 8L on 4R. I had very little over 100 hrs at the time an it was my first solo flight in a 182. Blew the approach, touched down WAYYYY too fast. Realized I was not going to get stopped prior to 8L so I firewalled the throttle and reported on the go. The tower was a little testy (perhaps they expected better from a CAP 182) but brought me around for another try.

That’s why the airlines pushed to not allow non-airline airplanes to hold short for airliners.

I beg your pardon, but I didn't see what the tower is supposed to say to me when they want me to land and hold short of a runway. There's a link there with a ton of amendments, but no summary that I could see.

Would it be "Cessna 12345 cleared landing 12, hold short of runway 21"?

I'd rather fly a little longer with a reroute than get to the incident expeditiously.

In the future, I suggest saying "Going around." Saying "On the go" sounds like you did a touch & go, which would be contrary to your clearance.
 
There must be some airports where that is a really helpful tool because it looks like it has a significant level of complication and risk.....something which the FAA would seem to otherwise prefer to avoid.

Please note the lack of quotation marks in that story even though a touch and go is preceisly what I did.
 
f. When pilots identify themselves as a solo student pilot, that pilot must not be issued a LAHSO clearance.

This sounds like a good idea.
 
I understand LUAW--roll onto runway and stop until cleared to roll. Easy to execute.

LAHSO not so much. I think most landings are a bit more variable than LUAW. If I was an ATP waiting on an intersecting runway would I want to trust some unknown pilot in a spamcan to stop before hitting me and my few hundred passengers?

No.

What if you respond to a LAHSO instruction with, "I'll try."

Because 121 planes just sit on a runway intersection all the time.

The scenario you just made up, wasn’t ever authorized, even before these changes to clarify the phraseology.
 
I think I've participated in a LAHSO once in like 12 years, pretty sure it was KFSD. My airplanes are slow that I can't imagine it ever going sour if the weather is reasonably good.

Perfect example is KMIA. They land Rwy 9 and rwy 12 those two intersect at the far end. If one plane is not LAHSO the spacing has to be made a lot bigger.

Sounds like a good idea but not always followed...was on my stage check flight with Chief CFI as as student at home trining airport and on final tower says "N123245, land and hold short runway XX for departing traffic"...being a good student aware of the limitations I reply "Unable, student pilot, 345"..."Really?...you have 6000' of runway...you can't make that?"...I look over to the CFI....he just shakes his head and gives me a nod..."[sigh] Land and hold short of runway XX, Skyhawk 12345..."

Well the CFI was PIC, so technically.... ;)

:lol: I did a scenic tour out of there around 2012 I think but since I had a commercial the guy let me fly the whole thing. Totally blew the approach as well for the same thing, but was able to get it down on the ground and sliding to a stop at the last taxiway before 8L. Almost certainly flat spotted the tires. Good times.

I have done LAHSO many times. It’s no big deal. Usually the length of the runway before you need to go.d short is the length of a normal runway.
